One thing missing from major brands’ Christmas range

Big W and Woolworths are making a major change to their Christmas range, removing one detail the season has become known for.

The festive season is about to get a new look at one major supermarket and another huge retailer in a controversial move – ditching the glitter.

Woolworths and Big W announced that 100 per cent of their Own Brand Christmas ranges will be glitter free – including decorations, wrapping, cards and all the trimmings.

The move is made as part of the Woolworths Group’s environmental promise, as glitter is made from microplastics.

In addition, both retailers will only be selling bon bons with plastic free prizes inside them.

Woolworths Group General Manager of Sustainability Transformation and Delivery, Liam Ward said: “We want to help create a better tomorrow, and this is a small but meaningful way we can help our customers deliver Christmas cheer without the impact glitter has on the environment.

“We know there’s more we can do and we’re working to reduce glitter across our entire range in Woolworths and BIG W.

“We’re also making changes to reduce plastic in its many other forms, with both Woolworths and BIG W removing reusable plastic shopping bags from check-outs nationwide by the end of June next year.”

Shane Carter, BIG W’s Head of Commercial – Home & Everyday, said the decisions made today could positively impact the future.

“That’s why we are excited to bring customers a Christmas range that not only looks amazing but reduces microplastics in our environment. We are proud to have also removed an estimated 29 tonnes of plastics across Christmas products and packaging since 2019,” Mr Carter said.

“At BIG W we know families will be looking more than ever this year to make every dollar stretch this Christmas, that’s why we’ve continued to deliver value and quality products across our Christmas Range to help bring more magic into homes this season, and for many more to come.”

While Woolworths has had Christmas items in store since August, BIG W’s Christmas range is starting to land in store and online from September 30.

Big W’s collection includes the ranges; Island Beauty, Garden Tradition, Celestial Scandi and Fantastical Joy.

Products start from as little as $1.

BIG W’s Christmas range also includes 24 Christmas trees, bon bons, advent calendars, 83 variations of Christmas lights and up to 50 per cent of the Christmas range under $5.
