According to Tinder’s annual Year in Swipe dating trends report, the future of dating may be written in the stars – literally.
You don’t need to be chronically swiping the apps every day to know the world of online dating can be absolutely brutal at the best of times. From snap judgments based on your curated profile to unexpected ghostings, braving the matches and chats takes courage, resilience, and an open mind (at the best of times.)
But while we can all agree the current state of online dating is in desperate need of improvement, it’s difficult to know exactly where – and how – to tackle the many systemic problems.
As daters become more aware of the kinds of qualities they want (and don’t want) in a partner, as well as the changing dating climate, the way they use dating apps will naturally evolve, as evidenced in Tinder’s annual Year in Swipe dating trends report.
The future of dating is written in the stars
Having been around since the dawn of dating apps, The team at Tinder have collated the biggest dating trends over the last 12 months, giving their users a glimpse into what people will be swiping after in 2025.
Diving into the psychology behind users’ swiping decisions, the report reveals daters have taken a new and improved approach to choosing their matches.
Enlisting the help of others, people are relying on the advice of their friends more than ever when it comes to who they date. According to the report, 60 per cent of Tinder swipers turned to their friends for dating advice, with 20 per cent going as far as asking their friends to pre-screen potential matches on social media.
In the absence of friends, however, daters are also turning to the stars for romantic inspiration – and yes, we mean that literally.
40 per cent of singles surveyed report taking the astrological love predictions or horoscopes to heart, relying on a person’s star sign to determine compatibility.
In fact, the report tallied up all the likes and matches dished out in 2024, revealing the most ‘attractive’ astrological signs.
According to female users, the most attractive star signs are:
#1. Virgo
#2. Leo
#3. Gemini
#4. Scorpio
#5. Taurus
According to male users, the most attractive star signs are:
#1. Gemini
#2. Taurus
#3. Virgo
#4. Pisces
#5. Leo
The qualities most sought-after
It seems daters are relying on more than just physical appearance and half-hearted conversation prompts to spark a love match these days, with singles prioritising less superficial qualities heading into the new year.
In addition to having some sense of astrological compatibility, people are vetting potential matches for trustworthiness, shared values, emotional availability and shared interests, according to the report.
In fact, 45 per cent of surveyed singles say they want to find a ‘Golden Retriever’ partner in the new year, seeking someone that personifies loyalty, friendliness, energy and optimism.
As for the qualities being rebranded most considered to be red flags, daters are looking to avoid bad hygiene, rudeness and too much talking about an ex on the dating circuit next year.
