Gisele Bündchen had an “ethereal” take on the revenge dress at this year’s Met Gala, attending the event solo for the first time in 15 years.

For the first time in 15 years, the Brazilian supermodel took to the red carpet at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art solo – having attended since 2006 with her now-ex-husband, retired NFL star Tom Brady.

As The Cut’s Danielle Cohen put it, the 42-year-old “positively floated” up the stairs, paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld and this year’s theme in a flamboyant bridal look from the Chanel archive.

“Throughout the divorce, Bündchen has generally exuded the energy of a thriving, newly unburdened divorcee who can finally move out of Boston, and the Met Gala is no exception,” Cohen continued.

“Look at her swishing around. All that jujitsu has clearly paid off.”

Bündchen’s white gown – which she paired with a feathered cape – was the finale dress from Chanel’s spring 2007 couture collection. While it was originally worn on the runway by Freja Beha Erichsen, the mother-of-two also has a personal history with it.

The same year it debuted on the runway, Bündchen wore it in a Harper’s Bazaar Korea shoot photographed by Lagerfeld himself at Versailles.

A longtime muse of Lagerfeld’s – and briefly the face of Chanel No. 5 in 2014 – Bündchen told Met Gala red carpet host La La Anthony that she saw the design, remembered having worn it for the Bazaar shoot, and immediately thought: “This is the one.”

“I wore this dress in a 2006 or 2007 editorial with [Lagerfeld], I wore this same dress,” she said.

“So when I was picking a dress, I was like, which dress that is going to be the dress, and I thought, this is the one!”

She also took the opportunity to reflect on some of her favourite memories of the designer, saying it was “hard to choose”.

“I just love the memories with him and the times [we spent] together. He was a gentleman and a wonderful man, always so kind. I’m happy to be here to honour him.”

In an emotional Vanity Fair cover story last month, Bündchen opened up about her divorce, calling the assumptions that she gave Brady an ultimatum – retire or break up – “very hurtful” and “the craziest thing I’ve ever heard”.

She told the magazine that marriages aren’t built or broken overnight.

“That takes years to happen. Listen, I have always cheered for him, and I would continue forever,” she added.

“If there’s one person I want to be the happiest in the world, it’s him, believe me. I want him to achieve and to conquer. I want all his dreams to come true. That’s what I want, really, from the bottom of my heart.”
