Aussie stars from The Influencer Index

We’re living in the age of influence.

Well, the age of the influencer, to be more specific.

A decade ago, the term ‘social media influencer’ might have been met with mocking and derision.

But with the most successful influencers in the world now presiding over their own massively lucrative brands, commanding huge global audiences and pulling in millions of dollars in revenue - sometimes for a single post - the critics, largely, have fallen silent.

But how, exactly, do you measure influence on social media and, by that measure, who are the most powerful creators in Australia?

In August this year, The Oz, a Generation Z-led publication launched by The Australian, set out to identify Australia’s most influential influencers.

The publication commissioned the first rigorous analysis of the true reach and power of social media - or real influence - ever published in Australia.

The study spoke to 2000 people aged 15 to 40, and used unique methodology, to come up with The Oz’s very first Influencer Index, a list of the 100 most influential social media creators in the country.

A few facts about the Index.

■ Combined, the influencers have a total following of almost 493 million people.

■ The oldest influencer was 50, the youngest just 13.

■ Seventy-four people on the list were Millenials, while 25 were from Gen Z.

Another notable statistic. A majority of the influencers on the Index were women.
