Kmart’s latest ‘must buy’ is officially where I’m drawing the Gen Z line

We didn't ask for this. And then we read the reviews...

OK, what in the Gen Z hell is this?

There I was, minding my own business scrolling through Kmart’s latest offerings online (admittedly, looking for crew socks) when I stumbled on something the universe definitely didn’t ask for.

I present you with this…

Yes, the return of the scrunchie leg warmers!

And that sound you just heard? That was the sound of millennials around the nation gasping.

Do we really want 80s fashion to return? Like, really? 

When flares made a comeback, millennials were able to turn their heads a little. Gen Z can do that one, but those born in the 80s were definitely not going back there. And we weren't even the first to wear them!

But the return of scrunchie leg warmers? I personally don't know how I feel about this. 

Labelled as 'slouch socks' by the bargain retailer, the new legwarmers come in a scrunch-down style just like the original look made famous when Madonna's Like A Virgin was at the top of the charts and Granny May's was our favourite shop. 

They come in a trio pack for just $10, with hot pink, light pink and white on offer. According to the website description, they have a "ribbed" design, boast a "Rosso machine toe closure" (whatever that means) and made from a "breathable cotton blend."

They sound lovely... but still... an 80s look I don't care to revisit. At least not in public!

Forget me though. If the reviews online are anything to go by, the people have spoken. And their official word is that they want them! 

"Absolutely love these!" one glowing review reads. 

"So comfy and keeps my ankles nice and warm," another shared online.

Apparently it's a winter 'must-have'

As I read on, the 5-star reviews just kept coming - for comfort AND style. 

"They are cotton which is great for your feet and they are super comfortable."

"Great quality. Texture is soft and comfy and they wash well. Good value for the price."

And then came those who disagreed with me and actually wanted to see the 80s item return to our streets. 

"Loved them in the 80’s, still love them now!" they said.
