An American man has been busted for allegedly abandoning a dog on the side of a road, in a heartbreaking scene that was recorded by a witness.

The suspect, from the US state of Texas, was identified as 68-year-old Luis Antonio Campos.

The El Paso Times reported Mr Campos was arrested two days after he left the husky and charged with animal cruelty for allegedly leaving the dog.

Footage from another driver captured the moment Mr Campos pulled his light-coloured jeep off to the side of the road before a younger man unclips the husky from its lead and gets back in the car.

The footage stoked the emotions of pet lovers online as the husky can be seen chasing the SUV as it speeds away.

“I can’t understand how someone would do that to an animal,” commenter Yazmin Montaya wrote.

“My heart is trying to heal itself from seeing this. It’s heartbreaking and I can’t stop crying,” Laura Vergara added.

Less than a day after the dog was abandoned, new owners adopted the animal as the tear-jerking footage went viral, KFox14 reported.

“I think he’s doing us an active kindness by completing our family,” the new owner told the news station.

“He’s not lost anymore.”
