Dog owners in Sydney‘s east are being warned about potential dog baiting after one pet became ill and died in a suspected case.

Waverley Council has launched an investigation after a dog fell sick and died following a walk with its owner at Bondi on September 15.

The owner told council rangers they remembered seeing the dog eat something in or near a pile of leaves under a tree on Ocean St.

“It is not known whether this is related to the cause of death. Rangers did find two dead pigeons in the area,” a Waverley Council spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with the owner of the dog at this very sad and difficult time.”

Signs have been put up in the area warning owners to keep their dogs on a lead and to watch what their pets eat during walks.

There are warnings that potential baiting may be happening across Bondi, with pet shop Paddo Pets sharing on Facebook that Waverley Oval may also be a target.

More pets may have fallen victim to potential poisoning, with one woman sharing her suspicions about her missing cat on Facebook.

Locals have shared concerns that their pets have been impacted by potential baiting.

She shared that her neighbour “witnessed how his 20kg dog ate something in the lane near us and died of poisoning within 35 minutes”.

“Sounds like a highly potent poison and would have killed Ted in a very short time. So far the most plausible explanation for his disappearance,” she said.

Waverley Council is urging anyone who sees suspicious activity to report it to the police.
