SHE may be a total eccentric but there is something fresh and beautiful about Nina Proudman's home in Offspring . Its light filled living spaces, soft bed linen and varying use of texture and wood throughout makes it the envy of women across the country each Wednesday night.
The home, which is actually owned by Australian artist Adriane Strampp was an empty coathanger factory when she bought it 12 years ago but Offspring production designer Carrie Kennedy knew it was perfect for the series when she found it.
"Deciding on a key location is a long process but you need to ensure the setting is fitting not only for Nina's character, but also offers several different camera angles and pockets of interest," she says. "Nina's place is perfect because there's so much going on with such beautiful natural light - it's layered, textured and intriguing - just like Nina."
Asher Keddie, who plays Nina in the hit TV series, agrees that the home is a contradiction of being unconstructed and playful, while also being quite organised and ordered.
"Her home has a very distinctive Melbourne style, with many pieces purchased from local designers," says Keddie. "It isn't trend-driven or intimidating and while being quite unique, it wouldn't be difficult to emulate. Its sense of calm and lightness provides her with a feeling of escape from her chaotic and demanding life."
Strampp's own pieces feature heavily in the home as well as products from The Junk Company, Tarlo & Graham and Guy Matthews Vintage Industrial Furniture.
The beautiful print behind the couch in Nina and Patrick's living room is from Rosetta Santucci and the bedlinen in the series is by Nancy Bird, Kip & Co., Ink and Spindle, Uimi, Harvest Textiles and Spacecraft.
This month's Inside Out magazine shows everyday designers how to recreate Nina's style at home, as well as those of other characters such Billie and Mick and Geraldine.
