Clients of a Sydney cosmetic clinic could have been exposed to HIV and hepatitis B and C after an unregistered practitioner was found to have breached safety protocols.
A staff member at the Ketthip Clinic in Sydney’s CBD breached poisons and skin penetration protocols, according to the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit (SESLHD PHU).
People who underwent invasive procedures, infusions and injections at the Sussex St clinic have been urged to get tested for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
The clinic has been temporarily barred from providing health services of any kind, after the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) issued an interim prohibition order.
Concerns about potential risks to public health from unsafe practices at the clinic were also raised with the SESLHD PU.
The Ketthip Clinic was then inspected last Friday, where evidence of some procedures conducted in breach of skin penetration legislation was found.
This included an increased infection risk between clients.
The clinic has been contacted for comment.
SESLHD PHU director Dr Vicky Sheppeard said the incident was an example of “unregistered providers putting clients at risk through non-sterile injections of potentially toxic substances”.
“If you are considering cosmetic injections or procedures it is vital that the practitioner is a registered health provider,” Dr Sheppeard said.
“It is easy to check if a practitioner is registered on the AHPRA website. Do not allow unregistered practitioners to inject any substance into your skin.”
Concerned clients are able to contact the HCCC via their email prohibitionorders@hccc.nsw.gov.au, and can find more information on the HCCC website.
The local public health unit can also be contacted on 1300 066 055 for more information.
