A healthy and active woman who underwent a routine hip replacement surgery was shocked to wake up and discover her foot “no longer worked”.
Lotta enjoyed powerlifting, rollerskating, martial arts, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and riding motorcycles.
Her adventurous lifestyle led to a slight pain in her hip and she wasn’t able to walk and run like she loved.
She was told a hip replacement surgery would be the answer, and was looking forward to getting back to normal.
But when she woke up after the surgery, she discovered she had no feeling in her foot and couldn’t move it.
She was told to wait until the anaesthesia wore off, and was only supposed to be in hospital for two days to recover.
A week later, she was still in hospital and doctors admitted they had no idea what had happened. It was something they’d never seen before.
“Just days before the surgery they told her that the doctor was sick and wouldn’t be able to go on with the surgery,” her daughter Jeanette Kallin, who is based in Victoria, explained in a GoFundMe to raise money for her mother.
“The options were to get this new doctor she hasn’t spoken to or knew anything about or push this appointment months back.
“Since she already had spoken to her work about this she chose to accept this new unknown doctor, which later would’ve been the worst regret of her life.”
The hospital Lotta was at, which is not in Australia, told her all she could do was wait and hope the nerves in her foot settles. A neurologist also said they were unable to help.
Lotta, who lives in Sweden, called her work to tell them what had happened. Her workplace refused to extend her leaving, meaning she’s unemployed as of March 25.
“My mum’s been through a lot and still she’s trying to stay positive,” Jeanette said, revealing her mum has fought breast cancer and had a series of financial troubles.
“My mum just cannot get a break. She’s now stressed over how to be able to get a new job for the future and how to pay rent, food and loans etc.
“She has no idea for how long this excruciating pain in her foot will be there for and how long she won’t be able to use her foot. All she wants to do is focus on her rehabilitation for her foot. Not worry about money issues.”
