Coronavirus Australia: McDonald’s to offer drive through bread, milk

Burger chain McDonald’s has stepped up to help those struggling to buy basics in the coronavirus crisis, offering groceries at the drive-thru.

McDonald’s in Australia will offer customers the ability to pick up bread and milk at the drive-through during the coronavirus lockdown.

The burger chain said: “from Wednesday onwards, in addition to our usual Macca’s menu, customers will also be able to pick-up two or three litre bottles of full cream or skim milk, as well as packs of English muffins and gourmet bread rolls.”

“Our contactless service removes any need for touch contact between our employees and customers, making it a safe way for people to get food and drinks, as well as these essential basics.”

It said the move was part of its “commitment to continue to support local communities during these uncertain times.”

Australia is currently experiencing “stage two” restrictions that mean people should stay home for all but essential travel, food shopping or medical needs.

The US franchise is one in a number of shops and restaurants that has been forced to change the way it operates to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

Across Australia retail giants like Myer have been forced to close their doors, while others like David Jones and Kmart continue to operate with reduced hours.

Australia has seen more than 4500 cases of coronavirus so far with 19 deaths.
