Sydney Eat Street: Celebrate Mother’s Day while in isolation

Dining out is not possible this Mother’s Day but you can still get creative, set the scene and put together a breakfast, lunch or dinner restaurant experience to remember — all in the comfort of her own home.

Celebrate Mother's Day while in isolation

With restaurants closed down due to coronavirus restrictions, mums shouldn’t have to miss out on celebrating Mother’s Day — without doing any of the cooking.

Here are some food services available to celebrate the special day even while in isolation.

NUTIE

The Balmain bakery’s signature treat is an artisanal range of gluten-free doughnuts which co-owner, Sina Klug, first introduced to Sydneysiders at market stalls in 2016.

Two stores and countless pop-ups later, her range has expanded, and this Mother’s Day she’s laying it all out in two different High Tea sets you can bring home for mum.

“With my mum being halfway around the world, stuck in Germany, I saw the immense need of sending your mum something she’ll love even if you’re far away or not able to leave the house yourself,” Klug says.

“We want to make sure no mum is forgotten this year.”

The first option suited for two, includes a generous assortment of sweet and savoury tarts, treats, rolls and quiches along with a handwritten card with a short message; the larger one has a bit more to eat as well as a dainty pink posy.

Or, put together your own sweet selection with a large variety of lovely surprises including heart-shaped Iced Vovos, Baby Cakes and Love Heart Brownies available only in-store Saturday and Sunday.

Add to that a 250g bag of ground coffee beans, some homemade pancake mix and be prepared to become the favourite child.

Pre-order Mother’s Day High Tea boxes ($90/$130) by 3pm, Wednesday, May 6. Only available May 9 and 10. Deliveries to eastern suburbs, inner Sydney and lower north shore.

Pick-ups in Surry Hills, Saturday, 10am-4pm and Balmain, Saturday and Sunday, 11am-5pm.

THREE BLUE DUCKS

Built upon a foundation of surf, sand and sustainability, Three Blue Ducks started just up the road from the heart of Bronte.

By merging two takeaway shops, it became a casual restaurant backed by fine-dining experience and a kitchen guided by the seasons — specifically what was growing in the onsite garden and what was on offer from their trusted suppliers. Since then, Three Blue Ducks has grown to four (outlets that is) — including The Farm, and even though their “garden” is bigger, their emphasis on “ethical and authentic food” hasn’t wavered; if anything, in a period of social distancing and limited outings, it’s more important than ever.

“This Mother’s Day it’s all about celebrating our wonderful mums from the comfort of our homes,” co-founder Darren Robertson says.

“A nourishing, tasty brekky with all the trimmings is the perfect iso-way to say thank you.”

And to help with that Three Blue Ducks has put together a Mother’s Day Brekky Box ($100) available via their Byron Bay and Bronte outlets.

Included in the hamper is Iggy’s (Sydney) or The Bread Social (Byron) sourdough and croissants; Ducks Mixed Berry & Davidson Plum Jam; house-made cultured butter; fresh fruit; Chow Cacao x Ducks Chocolate; Three Blue Ducks in the Country cookbook; cold-pressed orange juice; and a bottle of bubbles.

For Sydney mums, add on a family-sized frittata of roast pumpkin, feta and caramelised onion frittata, chilli jam ($24). Or if the celebration leans more towards lunch and dinner, there’s also the Mother’s Day Feast, a three-course meal that can be prepped for two or 10 people ($60pp). It includes shared entrees, shared side, one large main such as lamb shoulder, roast chicken or whole snapper, and shared dessert.

Brekky boxes are available for pick-up and delivery next weekend in Byron and Bronte. Order online until Wednesday, May 6.

FRENCHIES BRASSERIE

Cuisine: French

Mum, Mamma, Mutti, Mommy, Madre. However, you say it, there’s one thing we can all agree on is that matriarch of the family deserves a day all her own. And while dining out may have to wait until next year, Jeremy Pace, head chef of Frenchies Brasserie, want to help make sure she’s still given the special treatment.

“In France, Mother’s Day (Fete des Meres), is celebrated as a treasured family holiday with an intimate sit-down dinner featuring mum as the guest of honour,” he says.

“And that’s what we wanted to achieve with our Mother’s Day feast this year. It’s designed for families to unite around great food and enjoy a special meal in the comfort of their own home. Just like the French.”

VENTUNO

At this stunning wharf-side Italian restaurant, it’s family-first and for owners Silvia and Lido Russo that includes their work family.

Like any tribe, troubled times put that ethos to the test. Still, for the team at Ventuno, their strong bond, tireless effort and ingenuity are keeping things moving forward and to Lido, that makes this Mother’s Say all the more poignant.

“It really brings it home to the foundation – a time to nurture and appreciate the gift of life,” Lido says.

Rather than going for the requisite dinner, he sees this as “an opportunity for all children no matter what age to treat our mums at home”.

With Ventuno’s Mother’s Day promotion ($62pp), that celebration starts with antipasto including Stella Bocconcini, manchego cheese, olives, cacciatore salami and house-made bread followed by Galletto all Diavola (a butterflied grilled chicken), salad, and Tiramisu for dessert. (Wine pairings are also available).

Pastry chef John Ralley, the owner and founder of Textbook Boulangerie Patisserie, has a created this exclusive raspberry jelly, chocolate shortbread and chocolate mousse cake as a single-serve gateaux, or if you’re hoping she’ll share, a 6-inch heart.

“Mums are the best and we want them to be treated to an indulgent time over Mother’s Day,” Ralley says.

OLIO

Cuisine: Tradition Sicilian flavours with a modern spin and the freshest local ingredients

After weeks of being indoors, it’s fair to say that what mum really wants for her special day is to head out for a nice meal at a nice restaurant.

While that’s going to have to wait a tick longer, at least you can bring the fine-dining to her with a Sicilian-inspired four-course meal from award-winning chef, Lino Sauro.

“I strongly believe that now more than ever, in this very particular and overwhelming time, every single mamma of the world deserve the warmest ‘thank you; and unconditional love from all of us.”

Choose meals separately or opt for one of the themed packs such as date-night, wine and cheese and their signature, Dining Pack which owner, Renee Wallace says “allows you to prepare and create exactly what we do at Birch but with all your prep done for you”.
