Shoppers are outraged after learning that a beloved Australian snack has undergone a major change.
Yogo Mix has quietly removed its signature plastic spoon from its packaging, leaving customers feeling “robbed.”
After the news broke, TikTok users, Redditors, and anyone who enjoyed this nostalgic lunch box treat were up in arms.
“I’m in shock. They have removed the spoon from the Yogo Mix. No spoon, less plastic, same f***ing price,” foodie influencer Russ Eats lamented in a viral clip.
YoGo Mix, 150g, currently retails for $3.20 at both Coles and Woolworths.
“Could you imagine rocking up to recess, excited that your mum has splurged on (a YoGo Mix), but then you pull it out of your lunch box and there’s no spoon?” he continued.
“You’d have to eat it with your fingers. This is a joke.”
A spokesperson for YoGo told news.com.au, “We removed the plastic spoon from our packaging to quickly comply with the latest NSW EPA legislation.”
This new law bans plastic spoons integrated in packaging from being sold in NSW from January 1, 2025.
“While we explored alternatives like a bamboo spoon, unfortunately, none quite fit the mold (literally!) – but change is on the way,” the company confirmed.
All NSW businesses in the category have gone plastic spoon-free, but YoGo says it has been working on redesigning the packaging to avoid any future confusion and to “keep it simple and sustainable.”
In the meantime, customers will notice a note on the pack explaining the less plastic approach.
However Russ wasn’t having a bar of it.
“I get sustainability, but (they still have) the spot where the spoon used to be and everything else is fully plastic. At least the popper put a paper f***ing straw.”
His followers echoed his frustrated sentiments, with one saying the spoonless packet defeats the purpose of YoGo, which is short for “yoghurt on the go”.
“No plastic spoon, but the container is plastic? Make it make sense!” someone else wrote.
Others said the move was “irritating”, “inconvenient” and “an outrage.”
“Fill it with more YoGo or give us the spoon back!” one customer demanded.
Meanwhile, there was similar outrage on Reddit after someone in the r/australia thread demanded, “GIVE ME MY SPOON” and shared a photo of their spoonless YoGo with the message “No spoon, less plastic” clearly written on the lid.
“I literally noticed this three days ago, I thought it was just me,” someone replied.
“It tastes different without the little spoon. It’s a sad day,” claimed another user.
However, quick-thinking Aussies shared various strategies to consume YoGo moving forward, including using your tongue to “lap it up”.
Other suggestions involved eating it with your hands, bringing your own metal spoon with you, or folding the aluminium lid up to form a makeshift utensil.
YoGo isn’t the only product to face this culinary challenge, as other users pointed out.
“There are no forks in cup of noodles anymore too,” one mentioned.
“Or in the little Nutella packs,” another noted.
As of January 1, brands can no longer supply banned plastic items as part of packaged food and drinks in NSW.
Also known as “integrated packaging,” this term refers to plastic items that have been packaged through machine-automated processes and are either inside or attached to food and drink packaging, according to The NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
The bans include items made from biodegradable plastic, compostable plastics (including those certified as compostable in Australia), and bioplastics.
It comes after certain single-use plastics were banned in November 2022 and lightweight plastic bags were banned in June that year.
