Perth man’s cheeseburger hack goes viral

A McDonald’s customer has gained popularity very fast after sharing a simple hack to score a cheeseburger for half the price.

Josh Garlepp, of Perth, filmed his journey through a local Macca’s drive-through on Sunday which he later posted to TikTok.

The video has already garnered just under 100,000 views from impressed social media users who have branded his hack “genius”.

The clip titled “Macca’s hack on TikTok, you’re welcome” begins with Josh asking a staffer if he could get a hamburger, valued at $1.50, with cheese added.

“I’m not allowed to do that,” the worker responds.

“Can I get cheese on the side then,” Josh asks, to which the woman says, “Sure.”

The video then shows him putting the slice of cheese into the burger before eating it with a smug look on his face. John Farnham’s The Voice can also be heard playing in the background.

The difference between a Macca’s cheeseburger which costs $3.55 and a hamburger that is less than half the price, is a single slice of cheese. Obviously though, the cost – and savings – differ depending on which McDonald’s outlet you visit.

“Maccas don (sic) want you to know that a hamburger plus cheese is cheaper than a cheeseburger. Share to break them,” Josh had written in the comments section.

But according to a Macca’s staffer: “They don’t care.”

“As a maccas employee we really don’t care. Our register just won’t let us add cheese onto a hamburger,” she wrote.

While another worker said he would melt the cheese so customers weren’t able to put it on the burger, “purely out of spite”.

“I worked at Macca’s for four years and we weren’t even allowed to give them cheese on the side if they tried this,” wrote another, while a fourth worker said: “Nah sorry this wouldn’t happen at most stores. We know what you’re up to and purposely will say no.”

However, most of those who commented were just blown away by the hack, with one person calling the video an “Aussie masterpiece”.

“The hair, the song, Macca’s. Everything about it.”

“Not all heroes wear capes,” said another.

“This has literally just made my day,” a third person commented, while others used the words “genius” and “legend” to describe Josh.

But despite all the attention, Josh prefers not to be called a hero.

“I am not a hero, so stop bloody saying it,” he captioned the video.

It also appears some have known about the hack for a very long time with one person saying, “Ten years later and y’all finally catching up.”
