Coronavirus: McDonalds adds eggs to its essential grocery items menu

First it was milk, now McDonald’s has expanded its menu to include even more distinctly un-Macca’s items on its pantry staples menu.

Coronavirus: When will supermarkets go back to normal?

McDonald’s is getting more and more like Coles and Woolies every day it seems with the burger giant today announcing an expansion of its essentials menu of pantry staples such as milk.

“Over the coming week, we’ll be adding another basic essential to our menu, making cartons of eggs available to our customers,” said a McDonald’s spokesman today.

“Anyone who comes to a Macca’s for our contactless drive-through or takeaway service will now be able to pick-up milk, English muffins, bread rolls and eggs.

“We’re also now able to provide more milk options to customers with the addition of almond, soy and lactose free milk cartons to the menu.

From April 12, the bread rolls, English Muffins and milk will also be made available to customers ordering McDelivery via UberEats, Deliveroo or DoorDash.

“We’re pleased to be able to continue to expand this offering to help the community safely access essential items like milk, bread and eggs, as well as their usual Macca’s favourites,” said a McDonald’s spokesman.

The franchise began trialling the initiative at the start of April.

New South Wales and Canberra stores will be the first to get the expanded options on Sunday April 12; followed by South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and Northern Territory on Wednesday April 15; and Western Australia on Saturday April 18.

The additional menu items were announced after McDonalds first trialled the drive-through grocery menu on April 1.

The first lot of items on offer included two or three litre bottles of full cream or skim milk, as well as packs of English muffins and gourmet bread rolls.

Australia is currently experiencing “stage three” restrictions that mean people should stay home for all but essential travel, food shopping or medical needs.

The US franchise is one of a number of shops and restaurants that has been changed the way they operate to face with the coronavirus crisis.

Department store Myer is one of many retailers to shut its doors while others like David Jones and Kmart, Big W and continue to operate but with reduced hours.
