‘Chrissy New Year’: Comedian reveals Aussie love for end-of-year booze bonanzas
Booze, beaches, and Boxing Day tests – that’s all Aussies need for a cracker Christmas, according to one comedian.

It’s a simple formula for a classic Australian Christmas according to a local comedian.
Monty Franklin, 41, uploaded a video on TikTok as part of his ‘12 Days of Christmas in Australia’ series that outlines his satirical observations of Australian festive traditions.
“Well you start drinking on Christmas Eve and you drink from then until about the 3rd of January,” he said, before describing the 11-day period as a “bingeing extravaganza called Chrissy New Years that the whole country gets involved in.”
“We don’t even leave milk and cookies out for Santa, kids leave cold beers.”
After children open their presents, “you’ll have a beer” he added, before food is served and the first thing that comes out is prawns.
This follows a quick, important aside mainly targeted at Yanks: “We don’t call them shrimp we call them prawns,” before continuing that Aussies celebrate similar to Americans, with the exception of something “being off.”
“You’re gonna go ‘Why is the turkey a ham? Why is everything cold? Why are there sausages? Why are these people wearing paper crowns? Why are we eating outside?”
“These are just Australian traditions! The food is really just there to mop up all the beers you are drinking. Christmas is the one time you can drink 700 Crownies (beers) and not be labelled a pervert!” he said.
With Christmas occurring at the beginning of Australian summer, Mr Franklin then went on to describe the various ways that locals cool off.
“You’re at the beach, you’re in the pool, you’re on the slip and slide, you’re spraying each other with a hose,” he said.
Backyard cricket is the next tradition, where he makes reference to legendary Australian bowler Shane Warne in describing that one relative who tries to keep up with the kids.
“Uncle Ken will try and Warney his way down the pitch, pull his back out and he’ll have to go and sit down and have a quiet beer next to someone who’s passed out with their Christmas hat on, looking insane.”
With sunset at 9pm (thanks, Daylight savings!), the TikToker then said: “Two families from the neighbourhood will merge whatever leftover food and Crownies that they have, and have a second crack at Christmas lunch at Christmas dinner.”
After copious amounts of Crownies are further consumed, punters then go straight to bed before getting up in the evening to watch the Boxing Day test.
And the best part about the cricket?
“Drinking the beer.”
People from around the world flocked to the comment section to discuss their enthusiasm.
One said: “From an Americans point of view it sounds like a great time, would love to come spend Christmas with an Australian family and see what it’s like”.
Another said: “So accurate! Don’t forget the trifle for dessert! And on Xmas Eve the (Royal Fire Service) RFS bring Santa in the firetruck throwing lollies to the kids in the streets.”
