Five to try: The best tasting sandwiches in SEQ

Everyone loves a good ‘sanga’, and while we can always make our own at home, sometimes you just can’t beat a gourmet treat made by the experts.

If you want a fancy sanga or sandwich there are no shortage of options in South East Queensland. Here are five of the best options for you to consider for your next lunch.

Supernice sandwiches are truly next level. While the menu varies and quite often sells out, our favourites never waver, with their viral Reuben on sourdough topping our list every time. With melt in your mouth wagyu pastrami, sauerkraut, mustard, cheddar and their signature Supernice sauce, loaded between slices of incredible sourdough, it is a must-try. Feel like something a little less dense? Try the focaccia options, like the fior di latte, tomato, basil, rocket and pesto-filled Caprese or brekky option loaded with eggs, mortadella, provolone and pesto. Pair with a glorious Kinder bueno cookie and an authentic Wakatake strawberry matcha and your day is set.

From one of Brisbane’s best butchers, Meat at Billy’s, comes some hands-down epic sarnis. Adjoined to the Rosalie butchery storefront, Eat at Billy’s is a next-level sandwich shop taking full advantage of the best quality meat right at hand and the enormous passion of founder Billy Gibney. Opened back in 2023, the laid-back eatery took over the butchery’s original storefront, gaining notoriety for sangas like the Big Paulie Porchetta, with a whopping 150g of pork belly porchetta (and the crackling) salsa verde, pickled onions rocket and confit garlic mayo. This little joint even recently caught the attention of Australia’s No. 1 competitive eater James Webb.

Pre-made sandwiches can conjure the thoughts of bad egg and lettuce from a servo, but that couldn’t be further from reality here, as Butter Cafe revolutionises the game. The team here makes up their gourmet toasties fresh each morning and frequently sell out. The daily menu consists of four key options: pastrami, mushroom, chicken melt and four cheese, while some epic specials make the rounds each week. The mushroom toastie is a game-changer, with thyme-roasted mushrooms, mozzarella and pecorino cheese, pesto and a truffle mayo. Recent specials have included a Philly cheesesteak toastie and a pulled pork and kimchi version.

Launched as a revamp of the The Toast Office, Don Sanga’s has gone from strength to strength. This is unsurprising when you remember the brains behind it, Danny Simmonds of Criminal Coffee and Walt’s Diner. While The Toast Office was originally launched by his former employee Mikayla Stuart, Simmonds took over the business last year. Now Don Sanga’s has levelled up, slinging specialty sandwiches of every variety. From the brekky focaccia loaded with bacon, sausage, hash brown, bacon jam, smashed avo and fried egg to the toasted spicy jerk chicken, charred pineapple, jalapenos, cheddar and pickled red onion, the options are endless.

Toasties, coffee and wine? I’m not sure there’s a more perfect combination of offerings than what the team at Cheese Me Baby is pedalling. Six sambo options adorn the menu here, with even the bread itself a standout Pixel sourdough slathered with a garlic and thyme butter. I am personally partial to the roasted tomato wagyu bolognese toastie, complete with chilli, pesto, rocket, mozzarella and cheddar. The team describes their bites as “gooey, melty happiness in sandwich form”. Every sandwich here is lovingly made to order, dished up with a quirky side of cornichons and crisps, and best enjoyed with a dose of Burleigh Social coffee, or a cheeky midday rosé.
