A mother has labelled a piece of clothing she discovered in a major retailer as “appalling”.

Elli Tamar popped into Kmart to find a pair of shorts for her two-year-old daughter and was left unimpressed with what she found.

She pulled out a pair of size one silver “disco booty shorts” and asked what toddler would be wearing them, saying her daughter’s bottom would be hanging out.

The mother then pulled out other pairs of shorts designed for toddlers and was equally unimpressed, saying the shorts were no longer than the crotch.

“It’s coming up to summer, so I thought I’d get in early and buy some shorts for my two-year-old, and I was just horrified by the collection,” Ms Tamar told news.com.au.

She said many parents opt for Kmart first due to its lower price point and, in particular, she was shopping for clothes her daughter could wear to daycare without her being too upset if they were destroyed or lost.

“The disparity between the girls and the boys section is appalling,” she said, saying boys shorts go to the knee and their shirts aren’t cropped — the opposite of the girls clothing.

Ms Tamar said she ended up buying shorts for her daughter in the boys section, adding she was surprised Kmart hadn’t listened to earlier complaints on the same issue.

“They're way too short for a two-year-old to be wearing — like the crotch is longer than the shorts,” she said, adding that a nappy still somehow needed to fit into them.

“Modest isn’t the correct word, but I want my daughter to be able to play in the playground and bend over without her nappy hanging out.”

She said she hasn’t met many parents who don’t feel the same way she does, adding that the difference between the clothing for girls and boys is “black and white” but toddlers’ bodies were all the same.

Social media users had a lot to say about the shorts for toddlers at Kmart, with one saying; “I started buying my daughter shorts from Ghanda because they actually have some length.”

One said: “When I saw those silver ones in store I thought of that Kylie Minogue music video.”

“My daughter wanted a pair. I steered her towards a flower pair of the legging shorts. Thank goodness,” one said.

News.com.au has contacted Kmart for comment.

It’s not the first time that the budget retailer has come under fire for the comparison between their boys and girls shorts.

Althea took to TikTok to compare the difference in lengths between the different pants. The shorts made for girls looked like short shorts, whereas the shorts for boys looked more like they were meant to hang around the knee area.

“I’m in Kmart getting my daughter some shorts and look at this. Why are they f**king small?” the 26-year-old asked.

The mum told news.com.au that the stark difference between the shorts leaves a lot to “unpack” on how early women start being sexualised.

“A key take away for me is that women and girls are sexualised from the moment they enter the world. It’s not just Kmart and these shorts. It’s the crop tops, and it’s the ‘cheeky’ cut swimwear,” she said.
