Here’s what we know about what lies ahead for Carrie and the girls.

Here’s what we know about what lies ahead for Carrie and the girls.

CW: This article contains spoilers for HBO Max’s And Just Like That...

Mere hours before we sat down to watch the highly anticipated finale episode of And Just Like That... season 2, HBO confirmed that the show was definitely going to return for season three. As we watched Carrie Bradshaw wrap up her Last Supper in her iconic series apartment, have a bittersweet phone call with the beloved, and so far absent, Samatha Jones played by Kim Cattrall, and say goodbye to Aidan for five years as he drove away to spend more time with his troubled teenage son, we couldn’t help but wonder—when and what can we expect from season three of the pop culture-dominating TV show?

When will season three of And Just Like That be released?

It’s no real surprise that Carrie and the girls will return for another season, seeing as AJLT has officially been ranked as the #1 HBO Max original series and the most-watched returning Max original ever. The question on everyone’s mind right now though is, of course, when can we expect to see the season aired?

The film industry strikes kept production halted for some time, but it’s now been confirmed that shooting is underway and the show will return to screens in 2025—when exactly is still a mystery.

Will Kim Cattrall return in season three as Samantha Jones?

Of course, we know we’ll be seeing Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York Goldenblatt and Miranda Hobbes reprise their iconic roles next season, but the fate of another old main character is less clear. While the return of fan favourite Samantha Jones was a long-awaited win for the audience, her criminally brief cameo—that took place over the phone, no less—doesn’t instil much confidence that she will return. Cattrall has also made it clear on a number of occasions that besides this parting gift, her time as Samantha Jones is effectively over, so sadly, we won’t be holding our breath for her. But that being said, you never know.

What other cast members will return for season three?

The main cast—Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker and Mario Cantone—will all be returning, of course. The return of Aidan Shaw, played by John Corbett, was a big deal for season two and his reprisal as Carrie’s love interest was largely met with approval by the audience. However, the real major cliffhanger that season two gave us was Aidan’s move back down South to be a more present father to his teenage son, and his request that Carrie wait for him for five whole years—he even went so far as to tell Carrie that she couldn’t even visit him during that time (?!).

In new photos taken of the AJLT set, though, we’ve spotted Corbett a few times, so it’s now a definite that he’ll be returning. If Aidan has come back to New York ahead of time or we’re looking at a five year plot jump, whether the love story continues is in the air. But, let’s face it, it’s more than likely.

Che Diaz and Miranda’s relationship has been officially buried after Che’s scathing stand-up performance that essentially dragged Miranda through the metaphorical dirt. In January, Sara Ramirez, who plays Che, confirmed that they would not be returning for the new season. As both a result of the fictional breakup and Ramirez’s own political differences with the crew and project, it’s safe to say Che is gone for good.

Also not returning will be Karen Pittman’s Nya Wallace, Miranda’s friend and law school professor. It was confirmed that Wallace wouldn’t be reprising her role due to scheduling conflicts with her other projects including The Morning Show and Netflix’s Forever.

But with these departures come some new faces. Comedian Rosie O’Donnell will be joining the cast as a character called Mary, and based on the set photos we’ve spied, seems like she’ll be striking up a relationship—romantic or platonic, it’s hard to say—with Miranda. Cheri Oteri was also spotted shooting a scene for the series in May, and later, Logan Marshall-Green, Mehcad Books and Jonathan Cake were also confirmed to be hopping aboard.

Whether you loved or hated season two of AJLT, or a little bit of both, it’s clear that the hold the Sex and the City girls still have on us is firm—and they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
