'Entitled' act at Sydney beach enrages locals

"This is supposed to be a public park, you can't do that."

Dos and Don'ts: Understanding cafe etiquette

A photo of a sign stuck to a picnic table at Sydney’s Balmoral Beach has enraged locals, with one person calling it the “definition of entitlement.”

The piece of A4 paper was spotted over the weekend when temperatures soared to around 28 degrees and the Lower North Shore hotspot was packed with people vying for a position to set up for the day and enjoy the unusually warm weather.

“Reserved 31/8 from 1 pm,” the sign, which had been typed up and printed in advance, read.

"You can't do that"

After the photo was snapped and shared in a Facebook group, the internet collectively deemed it “unacceptable” behaviour that went against park etiquette of 'first come, first served.'

“Really? Love to know where you place the official booking,” one user quipped.

“Yah, nah, you can’t reserve public tables,” someone else wrote.

Another said, “You want it, put the effort in and sit there the whole day from 8 am.”

“Pretty sure the English did the same about 240 years ago but they used a flag, cannons, and muskets,” another joked.

“If you won't remove the reserved sign please update this post to add a picture of the group when they claim their tables. If they're that bold and brazen to make the reserved sign they will appreciate the free publicity,” one person claimed.

Booking a picnic table at Balmoral Beach through Mosman Council or any other method is not allowed.

A few people said they would let it slide if the tables were going to be used for a wedding or a “super important event”.

However, they said they would still expect a “thank you” written on the note.

"I am pretty wound up by this"

A local resident was so frustrated by the move that he called into Ben Fordham's 2GB show to vent about the entitled Sydneysiders who did this.

“I will try not to swear, but I am pretty wound up by this,” ‘Jimbo’ said.

“This is supposed to be a public park in Sydney.

“Imagine you stroll up to a park, you’re expecting to enjoy the democratic pleasure of a picnic on one of the taxpayer-funded tables, and you get there, and there’s this sign.”
