Selena Gomez announced her engagement to Benny Blanco this week, and one detail in the photos has people claiming her fiance is “cheap”.
The 32-year-old former Disney Child Star, with over 400 million Instagram followers, announced her engagement to the music producer this week.
Although the pair have only been dating for a year, Blanco – who is behind some of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry’s biggest hits – organised a picnic and got down on one knee, and Gomez said yes.
Gomez shared some sweet snaps online. In all of them, she’s beaming, and one shows her sitting on a picnic blanket admiring her ring.
Online, fans have been acting like internet sleuths, zooming in on the picnic blanket and discovering that Blanco proposed to Gomez after they’d eaten Taco Bell.
This information has quickly made the rounds online and sparked quite a debate.
Is proposing to someone after a fast food meal quirky and sweet, or cheap? The internet can’t agree and the conversation has gone viral.
Popular budget airline Ryanair reposted the engagement snaps and wrote, “Cheaper than us”, and that prompted fans to weigh in.
Someone else wrote, “Are you joking?”
Another said if someone proposed to them after buying them Taco Bell, they’d have said “hell no”.
One claimed that Blanco “must be broke” after buying her engagement ring.
There was also a fair bit of discussion about whether, even though Gomez likes Taco Bell, it is appropriate for a proposal lunch.
Some people took a real issue with the Taco Bell proposal and didn’t hold back.
One called it “disgusting”, another called the Taco Bell proposal “stingy”, and someone else said if their boyfriend proposed to them with fast food, they’d be “pissed” but “good for” Gomez for not minding.
Many people also defended the Taco Bell detail in the proposal and saw it as thoughtful rather than cheap.
“It is down to earth,” one praised.
“Sweet idea,” one complimented.
“Romance is doing something ordinary in a thoughtful way,” someone argued.
“Selena Gomez likes Taco Bell and, more importantly, she loves when people do things with love,” one claimed.
“It is so romantic,” another said.
No matter your view on whether Taco Bell is an appropriate proposal meal, the idea that Gomez’s fiance is being accused of being “cheap” is comical given her engagement ring is predicted to cost close to $400,000.
Jewelling expert and VP of Merchandising at Jared Jewelers, Ann Grimmett, estimated the marquise diamond ring to be six carats and worth around $354,000 ($US225,000).
In a press release, Ms Grimmett said the singer’s ring was rare “given less than five per cent of diamonds are marquise”.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, as of December 2024 Benny Blanco’s net worth is sitting at $78.7 million ($US50m).
Along with being a successful music producer, Blanco also reportedly had amassed an impressive real estate portfolio. He reportedly owns at least four properties, located in Malibu, West Hollywood, and the Hollywood Hills, with price tags ranging from $3.35 million ($US2.13m) to $14.4 million ($US9.2m).
While it is still a far cry from Gomez’s $2 billion ($US1.3b) net worth, it is definitely not insignificant.
Gomez has been gushing about her relationship with Blanco, and in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, said she was “beyond proud to know that there is someone in the world who deeply cares about every tiny detail about who I am”.
“More than anything, he’s just my best friend. I’m really, really lucky.”
Similarly, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said this relationship was the “safest” she’s ever felt with anyone.
“I see a future with this person,” she said.
Gomez added that she found that sharing some stuff online meant people weren’t trying to “hunt down” more information about the couple.
She’s also referred to him on social media as the “love of her life”.
