A tradie who suspected he needed reading glasses has been devastated by a sinister tumour discovered during a routine eye test.

Dalton Bean, a 29-year-old shed builder from Brisbane, was shocked when his optometrist stopped his regular eye check and referred him to the hospital immediately, for an emergency brain scan.

Dalton’s partner Shania Roberts said he had double vision and headaches for two weeks prior, while still working and living his everyday life.

“He thought he just needed glasses, during the appointment on October 17, 2024 he was given a 24-hour urgent referral to go to the Princess Alexandra Hospital,” Ms Roberts said.

Mr Bean sat nervously waiting for his results for more than nine hours.

“Dalton received the terrible news that there was a blockage in his brain that was stopping the fluid from circulating,” Ms Roberts said.

He was diagnosed with a Germ cell cancer in his brain and had a biopsy that, two days later, revealed a 2cm mass.

Mr Bean underwent life saving surgery two days later.

“He had a blockage in his brain that was stopping the fluid from circulating to release the pressure on his brain,” Ms Roberts said.

“The had to make a new exit hole in his brain so the fluid would circulate,” she said.

Mr Bean said he and Ms Roberts became extremely worried and scared.

“It’s extremely emotional and we don’t know what’s going to happen next,” he said.

Mr Bean began extensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy in November.

Ms Roberts said watching the usually active and healthy man she loves become drained and sick was “heartbreaking”.

“Our whole lives changed within seconds of getting to the hospital,” Ms Roberts said.

“We’ve got to try to stay strong and take everything as it comes,” she said.

The couple warned others to be vigilant in getting symptoms of intense headaches, blurred and double vision checked.

“You never really know what it is until you get checked,” Ms Roberts said.

The family have started a GoFundMe page to support Mr Bean through his upcoming treatments.
