A Brisbane resident has been left petrified after he made a shocking discovery at his apartment complex bathroom on Wednesday morning, a find that a snake catcher said occurs in one in homes.

The New Farm resident shared a photo on social media of a carpet python wrapped around a tissue box on his sink, to an online community group.

He urged fellow residents to be careful and take precautions to keep snakes out of their homes.

“Just a little reminder to keep your screens closed,” the man, who lives on Lower Bowen Terrace, said.

“I came home to some unexpected company.

“It has now been relocated by South East Queensland Snake Catchers,” he said.

The man confirmed his heart rate had since returned “somewhat” back to normal.

Snake catcher Jamie Harrison said the snake was an “absolutely harmless” carpet python.

“It is absolutely normal for this python to be able to get into a high-rise apartment complex,” Mr Harrison said.

“One in three homes have snakes hiding in the ceilings or walls that can help with keeping rats and mice to a minimum.

“When they get large they eat anything with fur and feathers so it is wise to be wary and keep small pets safe,” he said.

Mr Harrison said snake breeding season was due to start soon.

Mr Harrison said during winter snakes become slower but breeding season was due to start soon.

“If your yard has lots of palm branches and long grass this makes it more attractive to snakes, keep it tidy,” Mr Harrison said.

“If they have places to hide it attracts frogs, rats and lizards that the snakes will move towards.

“Once the weather hits a top of 23 degrees the males will be searching for mates,” he said.

Mr Harrison advised anyone who discovered a snake in their home to close the door and barricade it with a towel.

“Isolate the snake so it is easier for us to catch,” Mr Harrison said.

“Majority of bites happen when someone tries to catch or kill a snake. Call a professional,” he said.
