Experts are encouraging Brisbane residents to rush to the fuel pump this week for record savings on petrol.

An NRMA spokesman said the Brisbane petrol prices had “bottomed out” at 171.5c per litre.

“(It has) fallen 31.3c in 25 days,” a spokesman said.

Filling up at the bottom of the cycle instead of the top equates to a $17.20 saving on a tank of fuel.”

An RACQ spokeswoman said Brisbane motorists should take advantage of the upcoming cheap fuel phase before the weekend.

“Fill up today or tomorrow, don’t go into the weekend with an empty tank,” a spokeswoman said.

“It’s not going to get any cheaper than it is now, you’ll be paying a price of $1.68 per litre or perhaps less.”

Compare the Market’s Chris Ford said the climbing fuel prices in Sydney was “the writing on the wall” for Brisbane.

“The message to Queenslanders is to fill up now. Prices are climbing in Sydney, and with around 30 stations across greater Brisbane already at $2.09, the writing is already on the wall,” Mr Ford said,

“Our analysis showed that the wholesale price remained somewhat steady through October and November. It’s hovering around the $1.60 per litre mark now which is down from $1.89 per litre in April.

“Using fuel comparison Apps to compare fuel prices in your area is one of the easiest and fastest ways to ensure you aren’t paying too much to fill up, and leave more money in your back pocket,” he said.

NRMA released data revealed that Brisbane drivers who take advantage of filling up while prices are low could save over $900 a year on fuel.

“The NRMA launched its nationwide program through the My NRMA rewards app last month to give families a multi-layered approach to reducing their cost of living pressures and saving hundreds of dollars a year the bowser.

NRMA’s Peter Khoury said price cycle patterns in Brisbane had become shorter over the last three to four months.

“Without real-time data it is almost impossible for drivers to predict when to fill up,” Mr Khoury said.

“Today we have sent alerts out across Brisbane to tell people to fill up today – it’s the bottom of the cycle and with a 31 cent gap between the top and the bottom it’s crucial we help local families manipulate these price cycles to their benefit, especially heading into Christmas,” he said.
