Baby Macy’s Christmas miracle after months in intensive care unit

It’s the Christmas miracle that Moreton Bay’s Meaney family have been wishing for for 209 days.

Congenital Heart Disease tied to genetic abnormalities

It’s the Christmas miracle that the Moreton Bay region’s Meaney family have been wishing for for 209 days.

Baby Macy has finally been allowed home to Strathpine after seven months in hospital fighting problems with her tiny heart.

The baby girl was immediately whisked away for resuscitation and surgery after her birth on May 18 when a long battle began to get on top of her congenital heart defect.

“It was hard to accept that we weren’t going to have that special moment that every parent looks forward to,” mother Kym Meaney said.

Ms Meaney and husband Callum said the birth was the beginning of an exhausting journey spent bedside at Queensland Children’s Hospital, as well as building the family house they longed to get Macy home to.

“It’s been a lot of backwards and forwards, taking turns to stay at the hospital and be with Macy while the other comes home and looks after the rest of life,” Mr Meaney said.

Macy was tracking well in September when an unexpected setback changed the course of her recovery.

The little girl, diagnosed with transposition of the great arteries, suffered a brain injury and experts still don’t know the cause.

“That brought a lot of other teams into our journey. We started off with cardiology and now we have nearly a team of 10 specialists looking after her,” Ms Meaney said.

Macy has surprised specialists with how far she has come developmentally and in her recovery. Ms Meaney said she would be forever grateful to the hospital staff who worked tirelessly to get Macy home in time for Christmas.

“It’s amazing to know that at Christmas lunch Macy will be sitting at the table with us,” she said.

“Since bringing her home we can see her learning about the world, and she is probably going to run the household here in no time.”
