It’s taken less than a week for Adelaide singer Rachael Leahcar to get in tune with her new bundle of joy, baby Eli Gregory.

The Voice Australia favourite and husband Chris Johinke welcomed their first child at Flinders Medical Centre on December 8, and Leahcar said she’s already in a “rhythm” with the new addition to the family.

“He’s very loving and cuddly,” she said.

“He loves listening to lullabies and will often stop crying immediately if he’s sung to. He loves the pram and baths. Chris and I are so excited to see the little person he becomes with all our love and care.”

The vision-impaired singer, 29, said motherhood had been “challenging” but the support of husband Chris and family had made things easier.

“It’s been particularly hard navigating how to do things as a blind person. When I was in hospital trying to breastfeed, the midwives and staff tried to find resources for me but there was none,” said Leahcar, who shot to fame as a teenager on Nine’s reality TV show in 2012. “I had to figure everything out for myself and I was panicking at the very beginning but Eli is thankfully thriving.

“I’m so lucky to have Eli as a baby because he’s very patient with Chris and I while we learn how to take care of him.”

Leahcar said it’s too early to tell whether her degenerative eye condition, retinitis pigmentosa, has been passed on but so far Eli is in “top notch health and passing tests with flying colours”.

Leahcar said doctors estimated there was about a “one per cent chance” of her baby inheriting the same condition.
