Australian actor Adam Demos is relishing his career trajectory as the male romantic lead, especially when it brings him to the Gold Coast Hinterland.
Between filming seasons of hit global series Sex/Life – which saw his career skyrocket last year – Demos returned to Queensland to star in romantic comedy A Perfect Pairing alongside Hollywood actor and singer Victoria Justice.
Set on a Queensland sheep farm, the movie, out on Netflix on Thursday, was filmed predominantly in the picturesque Numinbah Valley inland from the Gold Coast.
“It’s a true privilege to get to work on these films as an actor especially at this calibre with Netflix and then all of a sudden you get to shoot one of them at home,” Demos, 36, said.
“I’d never been to Numinbah Valley before so I got to see parts of Oz I’d never seen, I got to live in Broadbeach and film an hour inland, it was incredible.
“And then I got to catch up with my friends and see their kids because life is crazy and it goes quick and so I got to spend more time with people who I wouldn’t have the chance to otherwise, so I was lucky in so many different areas.”
A Perfect Pairing follows Justice as a Californian wine executive who flies to Australia in the hope of winning over a major client and ends up working on their sheep farm under the watchful eye of Demos.
“I grew up just outside of Wollongong on a farm, on 130 acres, so I’m used to the land but it was a hobby farm,” Demos said.
“I definitely wasn’t a stockman at all, so I just trusted the wardrobe, the writers and the locations to help me out there.”
Filming locations included Numinbah Valley School of Arts Community Hall, Numinbah Valley Fudge, the Gold Coast Botanic Gardens, Sirromet Wines, Surfers Paradise and Nixon Creek.
“I loved Queensland so much, I really didn’t want to leave to be honest,” Justice said.
“We were staying right by the water and it was so beautiful and then we would film in Numinbah Valley in just the lush greenness with all the wild bird and the wild animals – it was amazing.”
“Everyone is so down to earth. I had the best time ever. I could live there honestly. I really loved it.”
Supported via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, the production injected an estimated $8 million into the local economy and created 120 Queensland jobs.
A Perfect Pairing, from Brisbane production company Hoodlum, is the third Netflix production to film in Queensland since 2020, following Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth and the Jessica Watson biopic, True Spirit.
The movie also features local music including from bands Sheppard and Jet.
“This project is a strong example of how my government’s Production Attraction Strategy benefits the local screen sector via existing production companies – in this case, Hoodlum Entertainment,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
“We look forward to seeing Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast hinterland in A Perfect Pairing, streaming to audiences across the globe.”
