And when in Te Puke - the kiwifruit capital of the world - be sure to snap up a photo with the giant Kiwi Fruit.

One of the most important rules to remember when travelling in New Zealand is to be respectful of the native people, the Maori, and their culture. Embrace cultural traditions like the hongi greeting, remove your shoes before entering a Maori house - known as a Wharenui - and seek permission before entering a Marae (a Maori meeting ground). New Zealand’s native animals like the kiwi bird and wētā are fascinating. It’s tempting to try and get up-close but ensure you keep your distance to avoid causing them stress. The wildlife need their space too.

Kiwis are famously friendly and relaxed individuals for most of the part. They’ll no doubt have loads to share about their home country and will likely be curious about yours too - strike up a conversation and get to know the locals you come across.

If you’re a smoker, be aware that many public places will be smoke-free. You may face fines for smoking in public spaces where there is clear signage to say that it’s not accepted.

Unless you’re in a touristy or market area, it’s frowned upon to try and negotiate a different price. Sometimes prices can seem steep, but that’s because the wages are also generally higher in New Zealand.

New Zealanders don’t mess around when it comes to their biosecurity and they do their very best to protect it. While it’s obvious to leave any foods and plants behind, there is a heap of other items the NZ government deems risky too, including herbal medicines, hiking gear, and diving equipment. Avoid a hefty fine and toss or declare them.

No matter where you are, you’re never too far from a top-notch bakery. Be sure to suss out every unassuming pie shop you come across.

Particularly if you’re visiting the South Island west coast, be cautious of the sandflies. They can leave bites that not only make you itch and swell, but also occasionally break out in hives. So cover-up, wear insect repellent and don’t leave any car doors or windows open in sandfly-infested areas.

When in Taupo, be sure to stop by the world’s only McDonalds with a decommissioned airplane inside its restaurant. Order yourself a Kiwi Burger and enjoy it inside the aircraft.

If someone says they’re going to the ‘dairy’, they’re going to the corner shop. And if you hear someone say they’re wearing ‘jandals’, they’re talking about thongs - the shoe kind.

When travelling through New Zealand, you’ll definitely hear and see native Māori words and phrases. Learning basic Māori greetings (mihi) is a great place to start; 'Kia ora' means ‘hello’ and 'Haere rā' is ‘goodbye’.
