We spend a morning with Brisbane’s fittest at Kangaroo Point
It’s Brisbane’s trendiest outdoor workout spot where every morning the city’s fittest turn out in their activewear to take on the stairway to hell. This morning, it’s my turn.

I put myself in the shoes of some of Brisbane’s fittest people for a morning … and there’s one thing I never expected - I actually kind of loved it.
Overlooking the Brisbane River and the Botanic Gardens on the other side, the stairs at Kangaroo Point Park are stunning. They’re also very steep.
WATCH ME TAKE ON THE STAIRS IN THE PLAYER ABOVE
After pulling myself out of bed at 5am, I arrived at the top of the stairs with a simple goal – try to run up and down a few times and live to tell the tale.
While I wasn’t wearing a matching Lululemon set or walking a well-dressed poodle, I had my trusty ASICS runners and a dream.
I was fine on the way down.
The middle section was narrow, steep and wound around a couple of corners, but I found my way to the bottom without tripping over myself.
Getting back up was a little harder, but still okay.
I hopped from step to step and, even though I’d started to feel the burn in my legs, I reached the top before I knew it.
Although I bounded back down without too much trouble, the steep section hit me hard on the way back up.
By the third round I was struggling, and by the fourth I was walking.
As I walked, I smiled at passers-by, and most of them smiled back.
On a couple of occasions, a friendly “good morning” turned into a conversation about what brought me and my camera to Kangaroo Point Park.
During one of those chats, a local woman told me tales of fitness fanatics through the ages.
A highlight was when she witnessed a young couple taking turns using their infant child like a weighted vest while running the stairs.
I kept wandering up and down, chatting and filming, but before long I was done.
In true Kangaroo Point fashion, I wandered over to Joey’s – a popular cafe right next to the stairs – and ordered myself a well-earned iced latte.
Between the views, the sun on my face, and the conveniently placed cafe, I would honestly consider making this a part of my regular routine … if I lived closer by.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my morning in Kangaroo Point but my legs are definitely going to be sore tomorrow.
