Why fun and feisty Prince Louis is a favourite at five

The youngest of the Wales clan turns five today. Here are some of Prince Louis’ finest moments, easily earning him the ‘favourite royal child’ crown.

Prince Louis steals show on Queen’s big Platinum Jubilee day

He’s the youngest of the Wales clan, with the biggest impact. Prince Louis turns five today and the fun, feisty fellow has fast become our favourite royal child, because of his cheeky antics.

He stole the show at the Platinum Jubilee last year and will be the one to watch at the Coronation next month. Whether he’s making silly faces, or his family chuckle, you can’t help but love little Louis.

Louis Arthur Charles was born April 23, 2018, like his siblings, in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, London. The third child to the Prince and Princess of Wales, Louis is currently fourth in line to the throne, one ahead of Prince Harry. This makes it unlikely he will ever accede the throne, but like his uncle, face future decisions of what his role will be.

But for now, it seems his job is chief entertainer. Prince William revealed Louis – like Princess Charlotte and Prince George – loves to dance.

“Charlotte, particularly, is running around the kitchen in her dresses and ballet stuff and everything. She goes completely crazy with Louis following her around trying to do the same thing,” he said on podcast Time to Walk.

Louis’ lighthearted nature is down to a combination of being number three and his innate personality, says psychologist Catherine Hallissey. “Parents can be more relaxed as they become more experienced. As a result, younger children tend to have less responsibility placed on them and are more easygoing and fun-loving as a result,” she says.

We take a look at our five favourite moments of the little prince.

LIVING IT LARGE AT THE PLATINUM JUBILEE, JUNE 2022

It was meant to be a celebration of the Queen, but the four-year-old stole the show at the Jubilee last June. On the final day, he sat front row with his family to watch the (rather lengthy) pageant and clearly it tested his patience. He slapped his hands over his eyes, puffed out his cheeks in boredom and threw a cushion around. When mum Catherine ticked him off, he blew a giant raspberry at her, in front of the world’s cameras. At one point, he sat on Dad William’s lap, before bouncing over to Grandpa Charles. It was more entertaining than the parade.

SHRIEKING AT TROOPING THE COLOUR, JUNE 2022

Look, if you’re invited on to the balcony at Buckingham Palace, you’ve got to make the most of the moment. Louis had us in stitches when he appeared at the Trooping the Colour last June, alongside the Queen. He chatted to his great-grandmother, before pointing and waving at the jets, then screaming and clapping his hands over his ears at the noise, as the rest of the family giggled. It would be the Queen’s last Trooping the Colour, so it’s even more poignant it was one of the most fun.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, SEPTEMBER 2022

Starting school for the first time is daunting enough, let alone having to do it in front of cameras. Little Louis was very brave when he turned up for his first day at Lambrook School near Windsor, last September. Pictured alongside George and Charlotte, the four-year-old was the picture of determination in his shorts, shirt and smart school shoes. William was snapped stroking his hair, tenderly.

To mark Charles’ 70th birthday in 2018, he had a series of family portraits taken with all his grandchildren and the-then newlywed Harry and pregnant Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. The photos showed a loving side to the doting grandpa, with one shot of him laughing and cuddling baby Louis and another where Louis leaned over and grabbed his nose. One of the photos has been included in the Coronation souvenir program.

GETTING A KISS FROM SIS, MAY 2018

Louis’ first official photos are also his sweetest. Taken by mum Catherine on sister Charlotte’s third birthday on May 2, 2018, a sleeping newborn Louis is cradled by his big sister, who tenderly gives his forehead a kiss. Catherine previously snapped a similar picture of George kissing a newborn Charlotte.
