The Script perform at A Day on the Green at Sirromet Wines

Irish rockers The Script hit A Day on the Green in Brisbane on Sunday with fresh songs, a nod to the past and an unforgettable Facetime moment.

Growing up in the 2000s, Irish rockers The Script’s debut album formed part of the soundtrack of my childhood years.

As soon as I hear the starting chords of ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’, I’m flooded with warm, sepia-filtered memories of after-school pick-ups, road trips, and nights of watching MTV for hours.

Until yesterday, I would have told you these are the first memories that come to mind when I think of them. But since last night’s show, all I can really think about is a stranger’s shirtless ex-partner, Peter B, picking up a Facetime call from lead singer Danny O’Donoghue, and getting serenaded by thousands of laughing spectators.

I can’t help but wonder how Peter is doing today. I wonder if he’ll think twice before picking up the phone shirtless again.

On Sunday, The Script fans headed to Sirromet Wines for A Day on the Green to see the Irish band’s Satellites World Tour live against the picturesque backdrop of Mount Cotton.

The legendary band was joined by special guests award-nominated English singer-songwriter Calum Scott, Sydney-born pop star Montaigne, American multi-platinum trio X Ambassadors and up-and-coming young Melbourne artist Lotte Gallagher.

The five acts put on a spectacular show, with lots of laughs, karaoke, and dancing.

The last time The Script performed in Australia was their 2022 Greatest Hits Tour.

Since then, the band and fans have mourned the tragic loss of co-founder and lead guitarist Mark Sheehan, who died in 2023 at the age of 46 after a brief illness.

Lead singer Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power considered ending the band, with Danny admitting he never thought he’d get on stage again after Mark’s passing.

But the frontman, who has previously described Mark as the ‘driving force of the band’ believes Mark would want them to finish what they started.

Honouring Mark’s legacy, the band embarked on a new chapter, introducing two new members, Benjamin Sargent and Ben Weaver, in 2024.

‘Satellites’, The Script’s seventh and newest album, is the first they’ve released after the loss of their lifelong friend and bandmate. Although their new music explores grief and loss, these themes do not haunt their sound.

In a recent interview with RETROPOP magazine, O’Donoghue shared, “I’m sure people are expecting it to be quite an emotional album or an album that deals in the past, but it’s not. It’s more of an optimistic album; it’s like, ‘Let’s stop grieving and start celebrating someone’s life.”

The ‘Satellite’ tour included songs from various albums, an appropriate amount of public humiliation in the form of spontaneous front-row karaoke, copious amounts of confetti, unforgettable crowd work, and a series of hypnotising, dynamic stage backdrops.

With a mix of nostalgia and the appreciation of a new era, It’s a show I won’t soon forget.
