The Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Alex Borstein gave an awkward backstage interview at today’s Emmy Awards, in which she joked about doing “so much cocaine” during the ceremony.

After scoring the Outstanding Supporting Actress Award for the second year running, the actress spoke with E! News alongside co-star Tony Shalhoub, who won Best Supporting Actor for his role on the comedy series.

Borstein looked perpetually confused during the chat with the enthusiastic reporter, which started on an uncomfortable note.

“Did you breathe a sigh of relief after starting the show so strong?” the reporter asked, referencing the pair’s win in the first category of the evening.

“No. I got nauseous and kinda terrified,” Borstein shot back looking puzzled by the question. She then pulled a face when the reporter appeared to lose grip of her microphone slightly, thrusting it overzealously in her co-star’s direction.

Shalhoub then responded: “Being the first category of the night is kinda like getting shot out of a canon. It’s unbelievable.”

Later in the chat, when asked “what it means to win the same award two years in a row”. Borstein bluntly replied: “I don’t know what it means, that’s a weird question. I don’t know what any of it means, it’s very strange.”

But it was the conclusion of the stilted chat that proved the most bizarre.

Rolling her eyes when asked how they would be celebrating after the event, Borstein quipped that they were “so wasted” already.

“We’re already so wasted … so much … just cocaine. You can’t even imagine,” she said.

She then asked the interviewer: “Do they still have cocaine? Is that still a thing?”

Ending with the reporter claiming she was “the wrong person to ask”, the conversation came to a close.

The star received her award with a moving acceptance speech earlier in the evening, telling the story of her grandmother who survived the Holocaust.

Borstein, who portrays Maisel’s fiery manager Susie Myerson in the Amazon hit, also joked about not wearing a bra to the ceremony last year.

“I know a lot of people were upset last year, ‘cause I wasn’t wearing a bra,” she riffed to laughter from the audience. “So, I want to apologise because tonight I’m not wearing any underwear. So, you’re going to want to just throw that chair out or clean it pretty good.”

Marvelous Mrs Maisel is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
