Netflix confirms Happy Gilmore 2: What to watch on streaming platforms

Netflix has made a huge announcement for fans of Adam Sandler’s classic character Happy Gilmore.

We’ve sifted through the latest offerings from TV and streaming platforms to find the best shows you should be watching this week as well as what will be coming to our screens in the very near future.

Adam Sandler is returning to screens as Happy Gilmore, with Netflix confirming the sequel is going ahead.

HAPPY GILMORE 2

NETFLIX, COMING SOON

Happy Gilmore fans, rejoice. Netflix has confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 is in the works with Adam Sandler reprising his role as everyone’s favourite underdog.

There are no details yet about the plot in what will be Sander’s third live-action sequel and the first in which the star revisits one of his early classic characters, an unlikely golf hero.

Netflix has not yet released any details about the film, such as its story line, writer or director.

Sandler previously told the Dan Patrick Show that the film was in development while Drew Barrymore last month told viewers on her talk show, “This just in, I have breaking news…. I’ll just say this, from my source, that (Happy Gilmore 2) is in process.”

TOP GEAR AUSTRALIA

PARAMOUNT+, FRIDAY

In the opening scene of the new local reboot of the veteran motoring show, host Jonathan LaPaglia jokes that producers told him and his co-hosts – ex-league player turned television personality Beau Ryan and YouTuber and musician Blair Joscelyne – “don’t ever try to be like Jeremy Clarkson, but also, be just like him”.

Wisely, they went with the former option and this version is all the better for the fresh and frequently funny chemistry between its three anchors from very different backgrounds. Lovers of the franchise will be pleased to know that the key elements are all in place – fast and fabulous vehicles, exotic locations, practical automotive advice, the (female) Stig and, of course, the Star in the a Reasonably Priced Car.

This week’s first episode has the trio heading to Northern Italy, with LaPaglia constantly fretting about damaging his $11 million, gull-winged Pagani – the Mona Lisa of supercars – Ryan testing the theory that you can get away with anything in Italy if you’re driving a Ferrari, and Joscelyne having a moment in a Maserati he’d rather forget while taking on the twists and turns of Mount Vesuvius at high speed.

HOME AND AWAY

WEDNESDAY, 7PM, CHANNEL 7

I won’t lie, it’s been a while since I checked in on what’s happening in Summer Bay (I’m more of a Yabbie Creek guy, really), but I’m pleased to report that it’s as tourism promo friendly as ever.

Which is no doubt why fictional visiting Hollywood A-lister Stevie Marlow (Catherine Van Davies) has chosen the idyllic seaside community as the perfect backdrop for her new rom-com.

The Bay is abuzz with all the media attention as – in a shameless and slightly meta piece of cross-promotion – Matt “Shirvo” Shervington hits the sand to interview her while crossing back to Sunrise co-host Nat Barr in the studio.

When poor old John (Shane Withington) freaks out at the prospect of his close-up, there’s no flamin’ prizes for guessing which much loved veteran steps up to save the day.

SKI RESCUE DOWN UNDER

WEDNESDAY, 8.30PM, CHANNEL 9

As the days get colder and ski-lovers start to turn their eyes to the skies, this reality TV show from across the Ditch makes for exhilarating, if sometimes wince-inducing, viewing.

But as someone who has come a cropper on the New Zealand slopes more than once, it’s also comforting to know we’re in good hands from our Kiwi cousins, who deal with unfolding chaos with calm, skill and humour.

It’s opening day at Mount Hutt’s 50th year of operation and already the dedicated team of road patroller Mikey, ski area manager J-Mac, med room boss Dr Kate and ski-patroller Brooke are dealing with knuckleheads in cars without chains, crowded terrain crash concussions, stuffed shoulders and a nasty car roll. Wear helmets people!

NCIS: SYDNEY

WEDNESDAY, 8.40PM, CHANNEL 10

This homegrown spin-off from the long-running military police procedural is making its free-to-air debut after going gangbusters when it was released to streaming last year, scoring a coveted slot on US network television and earning a second season, which is now filming in Sydney.

It was a great choice for the franchise’s first international series, making the best use of its scenic harbour locations and leaning into the ongoing real-world tensions in the Pacific and the AUKUS pact.

Olivia Swann plays American Special Agent Michelle Mackey, who is put in charge of a joint NCIS and Australian Federal Police squad tasked with solving a mysterious death. Predictably, there’s plenty of friction with her Aussie deputy Sergeant Jim Dempsey (Todd Lasance), which is fertile ground for throwaway gags about local slang, place names and venomous creatures.

BRITAIN BY THE BOOK

THURSDAY, 9PM, ABC

Fans of the Famous Five books will already know that when they weren’t eating cucumber sandwiches with lashings of ginger beer, oh-so English teen sleuths were forever thwarting spies and smugglers in the hidden coves of Dorset.

The holiday spot that inspired the prolific Five creator Enid Blyton is just one of the locations in the gorgeous coastal county visited by Mel Giedroyc and her friend and fellow actor Martin Clunes as they search for spectacular scenery popularised by British novels and films.

Starting on the harbour wall where Meryl Streep snogged Jeremy Irons in the film version of The French Lieutenant’s Woman, they travel deep into Thomas Hardy country as well as the location that inspired the 2018 bestseller, The Salt Path. The old pals are wonderful company as they crack each other up and share their mutual love of books – it’s all very jolly hockey sticks and smashing fun, as Enid might say.

MAY THE 12th BE WITH YOU

DISNEY+

Following from The Simpsons-Star Wars mash-ups The Force Awakens From Its Nap and Rogue Not Quite One comes this Mother’s Day themed short, centred around Springfield’s favourite blue-haired matriarch.

It’s only four minutes long but it crams in an astonishing number of pop culture gags from the ever-growing House of Mouse as Marge tries to organise the Disney+ Mother’s Day Outing.

When the family car won’t start, Marge and friends get picked up by Jedi master Ahsoka and taken to the Disney Playground Planet (via the Disney parking planet) where her maternal instincts kick in when confronted by a light-sabre wielding Mary Poppins. Keep the pause button handy to spot Disney newbies Chili and Bingo from Bluey, alongside studio mates from Marvel and Pixar, as well a late and foul-mouthed cameo from Family Guy’s Stewie Griffin.

TRAVEL GUIDES

SUNDAY, 7PM, CHANNEL 9

After winning the Logie Award for Most Popular Lifestyle Program for the past two years, the travel show that likes to keep it real is back.

For this seventh season, the fabulous Fren family, the flamboyant Matt and Brett, well-heeled retirees Kevin and Janetta and straight-talking mates Kev, Dorian and Teng are joined by newbies and besties Bri and Karly, who met on Beauty and the Geek. First stop is ten-day trip to Northern India and Nepal, which is bursting with colour, culture and chaos.

And while the no-booze, no-meat, no-wi-fi rules of the ashram in the Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world, get our intrepid travellers off-side initially, they are won over by the pure joy of an Indian wedding and left speechless by the sheer majesty of the Taj Mahal in Agra.

SHELVED

BINGE

In a similar vein to Abbott Elementary, Superstore or the US version of The Office, this workplace comedy is set in an underfunded, understaffed and mostly ignored library in working-class suburban Toronto.

When newcomer Howard is transferred from head office – aka Big Library – he’s initially viewed with suspicion and horrified by the shabby conditions, weird filing conventions and oddball clientele, but is gradually accepted by perky but naive head librarian Wendy, right-wing blowhard Bryce, and acerbic junior Jac. The library humour is gentle, with more smiles than LOLs, but it’s worth, ahem, checking out.

MEL BUTTLE: LET ME KNOW EITHER WAY

MONDAY, 9.40PM, CHANNEL 10

As Mel Buttle herself would probably tell you in her best radio voice, anyone expecting that nice, polite lady who sometimes fills in on the ABC and talks about birds and gardening might be best off looking elsewhere.

For anyone else, this stand-up special from last year – part of the Live from The Grand Electric Series that will feature Lloyd Langford and Rove McManus in coming weeks – is absolutely hilarious.

The former drama teacher turned comedian tees off on her former profession (with a special disdain for her gibbering Physical Education colleagues) as well as modern parenting, entitled children, growing up in the country and coming out to her parents.

TONY ARMSTRONG’S EXTRA-ORDINARY THINGS

TUESDAY, 8PM, ABC

It’s hard not to get swept up in the enthusiasm and emotion of the irrepressible Tony Armstrong as he traverses the country looking for interesting “stuff” and the stories behind it. Pedalling a ridiculous bicycle that he probably regrets, and working hand-in-hand with the head curator of the Museum of Australia in Canberra, Armstrong discovers everyday objects – from the venerable to the edible – that help tell the story of Australia.

There’s a commemorative pin that unlocks the extraordinary construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a giant novelty cheque that’s a symbol of sexism in sport and a delicious sandwich that represents the migrant experience in Australia. Each item comes with a handy explainer, making for a fresh approach to history that as entertaining as it is informative.
