The teen movie horror genre has experienced a resurgence in recent years.
This month, the hugely popular Final Destination franchise will be resurrected with Final Destination: Bloodlines premiering in cinemas on May 15 – almost 15 years after the last instalment of the horror flick was released.
Likewise, the much anticipated fourth instalment of slasher film series I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was filmed in Australia, is also set for release later this year.
And the flagship franchise Scream – that kicked off the genre altogether in the late 90s – will release its seventh film early next year.
To prepare us for the impending fest of guts and gore, let’s revisit the other films from the same era that, although may not have been targeted for a teen audience, featured the hottest stars of that decade.
Some of these thrillers were not part of a franchise, yet they still stood alone and terrified us. Whether it’s your first watch or it’s a rewatch, they’ll give you all of the nostalgic – and creepy – feels.
And right now, you can stream them for free on Tubi – a 100 per cent free streaming platform that has the largest content library than any other streaming service (even Netflix!).
Tubi boasts 7000 movies and TV episodes in Australia (Netflix only has 5600), so there’s horrors, thrillers and more for everyone. Here’s our pick from the catalogue this month …
Drag Me To Hell (2009)
This supernatural horror stars Alison Lohman (of White Oleander and Beowulf fame) and Justin Long, who also played the lead in another great slasher flick of that time, Jeepers Creepers.
The film has a 92 per cent score on online ratings site Rotten Tomatoes and is directed by Sam Raimi, the same director who gave us Spider-Man and The Evil Dead.
The movie follows Lohman’s character Christine, a loan officer who tries to impress her boss by drawing a hard line and not extending an elderly woman’s mortgage.
The old woman then places a retaliatory curse on Christine where she is tormented for three days before a threat of eternal hell looms.
Joy Ride (2001)
Who doesn’t love a good road trip movie?
Up-and-coming stars at the time Paul Walker and Steve Zahn embark on a trip from Colorado to New Jersey to meet a hot girl (played by Leelee Sobieski) when they encounter a truck driver on their CB radio.
From the comfort of their car, the brothers play harmless pranks on the truck driver only to realise he is a psychopathic killer who has been on their tail the entire time.
The film received positive reviews and raked in $60 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. It become a cult classic and has since spawned two direct-to-DVD sequels, Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (2008) and Joy Ride 3: Roadkill (2014).
Vacancy (2007)
What’s even more terrifying than a road trip thriller? One that takes place inside a rundown motel.
This film stars Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson as married couple Amy and David Fox who reluctantly book into a motel after their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere.
To pass time, they play a videotape inside their room and soon realise the horror film they’re watching back is of other another couple being killed inside that same motel room.
Moments after the realisation, masked men knock on the door …
Quarantine (2008)
This film gives a whole new meaning to lockdown.
It stars Jennifer Carpenter (who also played the terrifying lead in The Exorcism of Emily Rose three years prior) and heart-throbs Jay Hernandez, Johnathon Schaech and Columbus Short (he briefly dated teen idol Britney Spears in the early 2000s).
Carpenter plays a TV reporter named Angela who tags along with firefighters during their late-night shift so she can document it for her show.
A call takes them to an apartment building where police have been called in to investigate horrific screams.
An elderly resident then bites the emergency workers and soon enough it’s discovered that a deadly strain of rabies has spread among the residents.
Authorities on the outside lock down the building, leaving the unaffected people, including Angela, fearing for their lives in a building full of mutants.
