Australia 'Succession' star Sarah Snook nominated for 2023 Emmy

Sarah Snook is leading the Aussie charge at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards after nabbing a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series for her role as Shiv Roy in the critically acclaimed Succession.

The drama series, which screens on Binge in Australia, follows the Roy siblings and their fight to edge out their father to run the family’s media empire, has dominated this year’s Emmy nominations – announced Thursday morning Australian time – with a whopping 27 nods for its final season which wrapped in May.

It picked up 14 acting nominations including recognition for Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin in the Lead Actor category. It marks the first time in Emmys history that three performers from the same show have scored lead actor nominations in the same category.

Snook does face some stiff challenge in one of the toughest categories on the night, competing against New Zealand actress Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Keri Russell (The Diplomat).

Aussie actor Murray Bartlett is among the slew of noms for the video-game adaptation The Last of Us which nabbed 24 for its debut season, including Bartlett’s as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. He’s also been nominated for his work on Welcome to Chippendales in the supporting actor in a limited or anthology series.

Succession is the most nominated program with 27, followed by The Last of Us with 24, The White Lotus with 23, Ted Lasso with 21s and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel with 14.

Composer Allyson Newman has been nominated for her work on the series The L Word: Generation Q in the outstanding original music and lyrics category. Newman is up against composers from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Ted Lasso and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

The Emmys are slated to be held on September 18 in Los Angeles, but as Hollywood navigates the current writers’ strike and the potential of an actors’ strike, television’s big awards night could be delayed until the end of the year.

Studios are apparently in talks with the Academy of Television and Arts and Sciences, which stage the Emmys, about how to proceed if a strike by the actors’ union goes ahead this week.

Reports suggest if actors do, they could be out until at least the end of the year.

US media reports suggest the Academy is pushing for a November broadcast, while broadcaster Fox is said to prefer January – which would push the Emmys into film awards season.
