Sign Guy steals Annastacia Palaszczuk’s thunder once more at presser

THE sign language interpreter who went viral on social media after covering Cyclone Marcia has stolen the Queensland Premier’s thunder yet again.

Sign Guy covers Cyclone Debbie

THE sign language interpreter who went viral on social media after his coverage of tropical Cyclone Marcia is back.

Brisbane-born Mark Cave, who has been dubbed #SignGuy on social media, appeared alongside Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk once more at her press conference this morning to interpret the latest updates on Cyclone Debbie.

Known for his animated facial expressions and dramatic signing, the interpreter stole the show yet again with his gestures, which provided some comic relief amid the disaster.

His presence was not missed on social media.

People who had no connection to the deaf community praised his previous interpretations covering Marcia as “hypnotic”, “poetic” and “mesmerising”

Others have thanked the interpreter for boosting understanding and awareness of Auslan, which is sign language for the Australian deaf community.

But for Mr Cave, it’s all part of the job.

“Not many people know Auslan, Australian Sign Language, is a real language just like French or Mandarin,” the 30-year-old said.

“A lot of people think it’s making faces, but it’s actually got a syntactic or grammatical meaning behind it.”

The “Sign Guy” as he has come to be known, revealed he grew up with deaf parents, so learning the language was second nature.

“I was fortunate enough to have deaf parents, so I was brought up with the language,” he said. “I went and I studied and became accredited to become a professional level interpreter.”

Mr Cave works for Deaf Services Queensland, interpreting for people who are deaf or with a mental illness.

Through his work, the Sign Guy was able to interpret Barack Obama’s UQ Speech at the G20 in 2014, which he said was a fantastic experience.
