Married At First Sight groom Sam has skipped his honeymoon with new “wife” Elizabeth with an unexpected excuse which left viewers scratching their heads.
As cameras met up with the couple the morning after their wedding night things were clearly awkward between Sam and Elizabeth — but not for the reason you might think.
After waking up early and pacing the rooms of their hotel suite, an agitated Sam revealed he was going to be leaving solo today.
“(I’m) all over the shop, my head’s a bit scattered. Woke up really early this morning, check my messages,” Sam told producers.
“So my ex-partner’s mum has passed away. It’s a massive shock, I’ve got a lot of history with my ex, we’re very close.”
Next it was time for Sam to break the news to Elizabeth, whose tense reaction made it obvious she wasn’t happy about her new “husband” leaving her side so soon.
“I feel bad because we’ve just met and this has come up but I can’t disrespect them, I can’t do it,” Sam said.
“Like, I don’t even know what to say, of course you’ve got to go to the funeral there’s no problems with that,” Elizabeth replied, before Sam dropped a bombshell; the funeral would be in New Zealand.
“So that means we’re obviously not going on our honeymoon,” Elizabeth sarcastically replied, later telling producers his decision to go to the funeral made her “a little bit worried about my experience with Sam”.
The awkwardness continued as Elizabeth stood in the corner and watched Sam book his flights to New Zealand, with the store manager glaring as she heard he wouldn’t be booking a return flight.
But it was Sam who took a swipe at his new “spouse” as he left, revealing he wasn’t too devastated not to be going on their honeymoon.
“I can tell she’s very frustrated but what can you do? I’ve only known her for a day,” Sam said.
Sam’s surprise exit left viewers scratching their heads at home, with some speculating he was wasn’t over his ex or was using the funeral as an excuse to leave.

Sam and Elizabeth’s union got off to a rocky start, with the tradie complaining about his new bride’s appearance.
“I’ve never really dated girls as big as Elizabeth in the past, to be honest,” he told producers.
“Maybe I’ll get her running in the mornings with me. Maybe drag her outta bed with me. I don’t know. She’ll be right. We’ll get her going. She’ll be fine.”
