Brooke Satchwell looks forward to new role in Show Me The Movie!

Brooke Satchwell’s commitment to the Australian film and TV industry makes the actor the perfect fit for her next venture: playing team captain on Network Ten’s game show Show Me The Movie!

Oscars 2019: The controversy plaguing Hollywood

Her last starring role was in the much-loved Mr Inbetween but, despite the US success of the TV series, Aussie Brooke Satchwell is not ready to give up working at home to head to Tinseltown.

The 38-year-old, who has been a part of long-running local shows such as Packed To The Rafters and Neighbours, says her priority is finding good roles right here.

“I’d happily go over to the US if it meant that I’d come back here and get better projects here,” she tells BW Magazine.

It’s this commitment to the Australian film and TV industry that makes Satchwell the perfect fit for her next venture: playing team captain on Network Ten’s game show Show Me The Movie!

The comedy panel-style show, hosted by Rove McManus and co-starring comedian Joel Creasey, welcomes a new panel of guests each week for a trivia quiz on films.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for me,” Satchwell says.

“It’s going to be fun to work alongside some mates and talk about movies.”

Satchwell says movies have been a part of her life long before her now 20-year career even began.

“I grew up on a steady diet of ’80s and ’90s VHS. A special treat would be that Mum would take us on a Friday and get our 11 weeklies for $6,” she says.

“Mum would make pumpkin soup and if we were lucky there were Samboy chips and we’d watch VHS back-to-back — and always rewind so we didn’t get a fine.”

From old-fashioned VHS, the actor has seen the entertainment industry change through to the rise of streaming services like Netflix.

“I came in during the mid-’90s when the internet was being built … I came in at the crest of change (and) I’ve witnessed some very strong revolutions of content,” she says.

“Now it’s come a full circle. They are expanding on characters that are less homogenous.”

But for Satchwell the boom has been bittersweet. With films and TV at our fingertips, the days of sitting around the loungeroom watching an Aussie soap opera are over.

“Packed To The Rafters and Neighbours were amazing in terms of my connection to the audience … It was almost like you were a part of their family,” she says.

“I’m passionate about a shared viewing experience, there’s something special in it.”

Another revolution Satchwell acknowledges is #MeToo, which hits close to home for the star who was an early advocate against violence after being assaulted by her ex-partner Matthew Newton in 2006.

“(Back then) most of the commentary about my personal experience didn’t come from me — the focus got misdirected,” she says.

“It’s been very interesting for me now because we’re getting to a stage where these grey areas can be talked about. A clear conversation around an important issue can quite often be derailed into sound bites and I think real change is a much slower beast.”

Satchwell says her focus now is finding characters that resonate with the audience.

“We get very caught up in this marketed world (but) it’s really important for me to tell the truth,” she says.

“The international resonance of Mr Inbetween goes back to the fact that it’s a very Australian story. That’s the path I want to take.”

* Show Me The Movie! will air on February 8 on Channel 10 at 7.30pm
