Keen watchers of Married At First Sight saw the honeymooning couples getting to know each other at beautiful resorts across Australia and overseas.
Now, we’ve been given insight into how the four Queensland spots were chosen, the logistics of hosting reality television crews and what went down during the stays.
Novotel Twin Waters, Sunshine Coast
Before eyebrows were raised about THAT photo ranking task and Ashleigh and Jake exited stage left, they a blissful honeymoon in a recently opened overwater bungalow at Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort.
Portfolio Director of Brand, Marketing, Digital and Communications at Novotel Sunshine Coast, Suzy Raymer said the resort, which fronts a private lagoon and is positioned between the river and sea, was thrilled to be chosen as a filming location for this season of MAFS.
The couple and production team stayed at the resort for five nights, allowing them to fully experience the offerings.
Raymer said hosting the crew required careful co-ordination so production and other guests staying at the resort had a seamless experience.
“Planning typically begins well in advance (3-4 weeks), involving logistical considerations such as venue access, privacy measures, and scheduling adjustments,” she said.
“At times, certain areas may be reserved for filming, but we always strive to minimise disruption to our in-house guests.
“When guests do come across filming, they often find it exciting to see the behind-the-scenes action!”
Ashleigh, Jake, and the team enjoyed everything the resort had to offer, Raymer said, from breathtaking scenery to signature experiences that showcase the destination’s unique charm.
“It was a pleasure hosting them, and we’re delighted they had such a memorable time,” she said.
The newlyweds were seen on the show enjoying lunch on their balcony with stunning water views.
“I think this is just amazing,” said Ashleigh during their honeymoon episode.
Jake added that they were “living the bloody dream” at the resort.
Raymer said the resort had received fantastic feedback since the episodes aired, with an increase in interest from guests looking to experience the resort, and particularly their stunning overwater bungalows, first-hand.
“The exposure has helped showcase our stunning location to a broader audience, inspiring more travellers to visit,” she said.
She recommends at least five to seven days at the resort to fully unwind and enjoy everything the resort has to offer saying they would be happy to assist with tailored packages to suit guests needs.
Kingfisher Bay Resort, K’gari (Fraser Island)
Lauren and “I have non-negotiables” Eliot honeymooned at Kingfisher Bay Resort on K’gari before Eliot made the sudden decision to leave the experiment shortly after their arrival due to the pair’s “incompatibility”.
The pair’s infamous dinner blow-up happened on the rainforest deck of the resort’s Asian-fusion restaurant Dune where culinary delights were still on show.
Lauren put on a brave face, deciding to continue her time at Kingfisher Bay Resort solo at the resort which offers two other restaurants, bars (including the idyllic Sunset Bar where cheese, fresh prawns and drinks are enjoyed right on the beach) a beautiful day spa, World Heritage wilderness to explore, ranger-guided nature walks, spectacular island locations including iconic Lake McKenzie.
It’s not the first time the show has filmed at MAFS after newlyweds Mat and Alycia stayed there in 2016.
Communications Manager at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Lauren Fenn-Walton, said Kingfisher Bay Resort took immense pride in hosting film crews and media on the island with a lot of planning going into ensuring that all accommodation and curated resort and dining experiences run smoothly for the talent and crew.
“We’ve had a surge of interest and excitement surrounding the episode, with a number of new and returning guests commenting on the feature,” she added.
Honeymooners looking to enjoy the island can explore brand new honeymoon packages launching later this year with Fenn-Walton saying there are so many natural wonders to explore, the resort recommends at least five to six nights for couples to truly immerse themselves in the destination.
Daydream Island Resort, Whitsundays
Pocket rocket Jamie and her neck-tatted beau Dave were the lucky couple sent to Daydream Island Resort for their romantic honeymoon.
The gorgeous Whitsunday resort offers guests seclusion and solitude just a 30-minute ferry ride from the mainland.
Jamie and Dave were seen on the show kayaking, taking full advantage of the resort’s stunning landscape and amenities, enjoying every second on the island.
“Can we stay a bit longer please?” remarked groom Dave at the end of the honeymoon.
A Daydream Island Resort spokesperson said they were approached by the team at MAFS to host one of the honeymoons and were happy to participate.
“We love the show and our couple are the best!” they said.
The couple spent three days at the resort with the spokesperson saying they got to participate in many of their activities like Living Reef Snorkel, sailing, jetski, clear kayak tours as well as a romantic dinner in the underwater observatory and a day was spent out on the water on a private vessel, all planned by the team at the resort to fit the honeymoon experience while still keeping it low key.
“We don’t want the couple getting exposed before the show!” they said.
“No staff are even aware of the reason for the filming, so the secret is easy to keep.”
They said honeymooners usually decide to spend four or five nights on the island to give themselves plenty of time to explore the area as well as relax and do nothing.
Imperial Hotel, Gold Coast
Imperial Hotel on the Gold Coast hosted second-time lucky Rhi and Jeff on their luxuriously indulgent honeymoon at what was formerly the Palazzo Versace.
The hotel boasts a stunning waterfront location, breathtaking architecture, lavish accommodations, and Italian craftsmanship across the hotel, all creating an ambience of pure sophistication.
Rhi and Jeff enjoyed the award-winning restaurants, spa, and private marina with bride Rhi gushing about the “amazing hotel” as the honeymoons came to a close.
A spokesperson for the Imperial Hotel said honeymooners would have plenty to do at the hotel including indulging in exquisite dining at Il Barocco Restaurant, where they could savour a decadent seafood buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings or choose from the a la carte menu daily.
There’s also the chance to lounge by the scenic lagoon pool, soaking up the Gold Coast sun, and enjoying their poolside menu, offering everything from fresh oysters to gourmet pizzas, or try the High Tea at Le Jardin, complete with a glass of bubbles, while the in-house pianist sets the perfect romantic ambience from Friday to Sunday afternoons.
“We recommend honeymooning at The Imperial for a full week to truly immerse yourselves in luxury and romance,” they added.
Rhi and Jeff were seen on the show taking in the luxury with lazy mornings in bed and enjoying the stunning views.
