Brisbane’s signature LGBTQIA+ celebration, Big Gay Day, is set to return with a bang over the May long weekend in 2024, headlined by none other than Spice Girl Melanie C.
The Wickham Hotel will play host to the extravaganza on May 5, marking the festival’s 24th year with its most ambitious line-up yet.
In what is shaping up to be a landmark year for the festival, Melanie C will headline the one-day spectacle, bringing her iconic brand of pop royalty to Brisbane’s doorstep directly from the UK.
Joining Melanie C on the bill are a host of talents including the electric Sneaky Sound System, the UK’s Tall Paul, drag sensation Hannah Conda, the innovative Briefs Factory, soulful singer Jarred Baker, and the captivating Mega Drag ensemble.
The festival, renowned for its inclusive atmosphere and commitment to celebrating diversity, will transform the streets around The Wickham into a kaleidoscope of colour and sound.
This year’s theme, ‘Wickham of Oz,’ invites attendees to journey down a rainbow brick road, offering a unique twist on the classic tale with a decidedly colourful flavour.
Brisbane’s LGBTQIA+ icon Paul Wheeler will return to MC the event, ensuring the day is packed with entertainment, empowerment, and, most importantly, fun.
Beyond the spectacle and celebration, Big Gay Day plays a pivotal role in supporting LGBTQIA+ charities, with the 2024 event set to donate a portion of proceeds to two vital organisations. Over the years, the festival has raised approximately $10,000 annually for charity, highlighting its commitment to not just celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community but also supporting it.
Venue Manager of The Wickham, Mark Baker expressed his excitement for the upcoming event.
“Big Gay Day has become such an iconic day in the calendar for our community,” he said.
“It’s all about being loud, proud, and having a lot of fun to raise money for important charities in the LGBTQIA+ space and we’re so excited for what’s coming in 2024.”
