Radio personality Robin Bailey has “partied hard” as she was joined by family and friends to farewell her beloved husband Sean Pickwell.
“He went out his way … no funeral, just one big kick-ass party,” she said in a post on Instagram today.
Pickwell had been battling liver cancer since 2017 and died the morning of September 26.
His death came five years after Bailey’s first husband, Tony Smart, took his own life.
The service was held yesterday at The Outpost Bar in The Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, with white guitars in place of a condolence book and backstage passes for an order of service.
“I struggle to fathom what my life will be without him but all of us left knowing that Sean Pickwell is now holding us in our hearts,” Bailey said in her post, accompanied with the hashtags #bestfuneralever and #byepandapickwell,
She called Pickwell her “big, beautiful panda”, her “absolute soulmate” and “true love”.
Bailey said her husband’s father, close friends and children plus her three sons gave speeches.
“It was raw, real and very rock ‘n’ roll,” she wrote.
“And then when we dried our eyes, we danced.”
Chocolate Starfish lead singer Adam Thompson, who played at Bailey and Pickwell’s wedding, sang How Sweet it is to be Loved by You and Somebody to Love.
Money was donated to Karuna Hospice Services in Windsor, Queensland in place of flowers.
“This most amazing none profit organisation gave us the support and means to grant his final wishes to die at home surrounded in love with the people he loved,” Bailey said in a separate Instagram post.
She said Pickwell had died “at home with us holding him” which is what he had wanted.
Bailey encouraged those touched by his journey to consider giving “lifesaving” blood.
Bailey quit as co-host of Triple M Brisbane’s The Big Breakfast show in mid-September.
She had spent every moment with Pickwell since leaving the radio gig.
“A major chapter in my life closed as I said goodbye to Triple M to come home and spend time with my gorgeous husband Sean,” she wrote on Facebook after her final show.
“No career highlight will ever replace this precious, precious time and for that I am truly thankful.”
