In the superstitious world of sports, Brisbane Broncos player Pat Carrigan may have introduced one of the most unusual yet: ‘lucky undies’ featuring the face of Nova radio host David ‘Luttsy’ Lutteral.
The unique Speedos are credited by some, including Luttsy himself, with playing a role in the Broncos’ 30 to 14 NRL victory over the Parramatta Eels on Friday.
The distinctive red budgie smugglers were a gift from Luttsy and the Nova radio team, given to Carrigan during a broadcast session with hosts Ash Bradnam, Susie O’Neill, and Lutteral himself on May 2.
Despite a loss in the undies’ debut during the Broncos and Roosters game on May 3, Carrigan, undeterred, wore them again in the successful match against the Eels.
The origin of this quirky tradition occurred quite spontaneously.
“I’m not even kidding it was Pat’s idea. We were having a milkshake one day on James St and he said ‘why don’t I get some budgie smugglers with your face on it’? I mean, how could I resist that!” Luttsy recounted.
Luttsy also detailed the camaraderie and mutual respect that has formed between him and Carrigan, stating that he never harboured any doubts about the 26-year-old player proudly wearing the budgie smugglers.
“Pat is a couple of years younger than me but we really connect. I was certain he would wear them when he said he would,” he said.
“He’s a man of his word and we have a mutual respect in that way.”
The radio host further admired Carrigan’s determination to stick with the lucky charm, even after an initial setback. “I really respect that he wore them for the second game after the first game loss. Coach Walters instilled in the team that I bring good luck to the team and Patty just put them in a double wash cycle and went for round 2,” Luttsy said.
Now, even teammates like Kotoni Staggs are eyeing the magical undies, although Luttsy insists they are a one-man charm.
“Of course other players like Kotoni want to wear them now but I couldn’t do it to Patty. I’m a one-man budgie smuggler and I know Patty is too,” Luttsy said.
Looking forward, Luttsy has high hopes for the power of these unusual undies, especially with the State of Origin series on the horizon.
“I guess the ultimate goal would be to see Patty celebrating an Origin win with my face all over his groin. It’s the stuff of dreams I know, but we wouldn’t have gotten this far if we weren’t two Brisbane kids with stars in our eyes,” he said.
