Queensland is set to host its largest television series production to date, with Legendary Entertainment’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, a major instalment in the Godzilla vs Kong franchise, beginning filming in the state.
This marks a significant milestone for the local screen industry, with the production expected to inject over $115 million into the Queensland economy and create approximately 1,000 jobs.
The production, now in its second season, follows the success of the first season, which was filmed in Cananda and Japan, starring Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, and Anna Sawai.
The series, which follows two siblings as they uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organisation known as Monarch, has quickly built a strong fanbase, making Queensland’s role in its continuation a major coup for the state.
This new chapter in the globally acclaimed Monsterverse further solidifies Queensland’s reputation as a hub for major international productions. Previous collaborations with Legendary Entertainment include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kong: Skull Island.
Queensland Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch highlighted the economic and employment benefits of the production.
“Season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will provide jobs for around 1000 local cast
and crew,” she said.
“It’s a big boost for small businesses who will help deliver the production – everything from accommodation, medical services and catering to security, transport and wardrobe supplies.
“As the largest television series to film in Queensland, this deal demonstrates the ability of our strategy to secure a pipeline of economy and job-boosting productions.”
The production is supported by the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy, which has attracted 65 films and series since 2015, generating over 22,000 jobs and contributing more than $2 billion to the state’s economy.
Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney praised the state’s ability to draw such high-profile productions.
“Securing Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the fourth production to be made in Queensland by this acclaimed studio, is a testament to our winning combination of talented local screen practitioners, world-class facilities, diverse locations and competitive incentives,” she said.
