Queensland news reader Mia Glover, known for her roles as a weekend news presenter on 9 News and as a reporter for the Today Show, received a peculiar farewell as she prepared to go on maternity leave on Wednesday.
In what was meant to be a touching send-off, Glover found herself awkwardly bid farewell while reporting live from a crime scene on the Gold Coast.
The farewell unfolded on the Today Show as hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo said goodbye to the heavily pregnant Glover during a live cross.
Glover, standing in front of a crime scene in Ormeau, was reporting on an overnight break-in at a local tobacco shop when the conversation took an unexpected turn toward her maternity leave.
As police combed through the crime scene in the background, Stefanovic and Abo lightheartedly chatted with Glover about her pregnancy, gifting her a bouquet of flowers and a small onesie embroidered with the Today logo.
Glover, cradling her baby bump, was joined by her husband Paul and their four-year-old son Albert, creating a surreal juxtaposition of celebration and crime reporting.
The comedic undertones were not lost on Stefanovic, who jokingly said, “Beautiful happiness in front of a crime scene in Queensland, says everything about Queensland, doesn’t it?” The awkwardness of the situation was undeniable, with Glover and the hosts giggling through the exchange.
The crime Glover was reporting on involved a gang that had rammed a ute into a Peachey Road business around 3am, targeting an ATM inside the Gold Puff tobacco shop. After wrapping a chain around the ATM, the offenders dragged it outside and stole the cash. The culprits fled in a white Toyota HiLux, leaving police to investigate the scene as the farewell played out.
This marks Glover’s second child, with her son Albert being born in December 2019. Reflecting on her growing family, Glover expressed excitement about welcoming a baby girl. “This is going to be a mini-me, which is a bit crazy … I don’t know if the world’s ready for it,” she joked.
Despite the unconventional setting, Glover’s farewell was filled with warmth and well-wishes from her Today family.
As Stefanovic and Abo signed off, he added one last cheeky remark about the situation: “It says everything about Queensland, doesn’t it?“ Abo chimed in, reflecting on the awkward exchange at the crime scene, adding, “It’s everyone’s mood, isn’t it? “.
