A beloved Sunshine Coast radio star has revealed she will soon leave her “dream job”, just weeks after her co-host announced his resignation.

Co-host of 92.7 MIX FM’s Drive show Sami Muirhead will step down from her position after her last session later this year, alongside Todd Widdicombe.

Mr Widdicombe announced his resignation last month, saying he needed time to work on his mental health after a string of personal losses.

On Monday, Ms Muirhead told listeners she would leave as well.

“You saying you’re going has made me really stop and think,” she said to her co-host.

“And it does seem fitting, Todd Widdicombe, to go together.”

Mr Widdicombe assured her he understood why she was leaving.

“I get it,” he said.

“To roll out together is probably the best way for it to happen.”

Ms Muirhead revealed she had “always struggled” with “mum guilt” and, as hard as it was to say goodbye, she felt the need to take some time off radio to focus on her family.

“I don’t want to leave,” she said, teary eyed.

“I have my dream job. I love MIX FM. I love our people here.”

Despite her list of reasons to stay, Ms Muirhead said she would feel “selfish” to continue working on the show with her children waiting for her at home.

“I have three kids who could probably do with a bit more of their mum at the moment,” she said.

“Particularly Nixon,” she added, referencing her son with autism.

“I just want to be there in the afternoons to pick him up and if he’s had a crap day, go, ‘hey, let’s go to the beach, or do whatever’,” she said.

“I need to go learn to just calm down a bit and learn to be a mum.”

Ms Muirhead finished her announcement with a quote from Winnie the Pooh.

“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard,” she read.

Ms Muirhead’s resignation has triggered an outpouring of support, appreciation, and sadness from the Sunshine Coast community.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace took to the comment section of Ms Muirhead’s resignation announcement on Facebook to say how sad he was to see her go.

“Sami you are amazing,” he wrote.

“This is so sad.

“When the time is right, I guess the time is right.

“You will be so sorely missed but family should always come first.”

Listener Anne Herriman said radio duos like the co-hosts of Drive had been “just the best” and she could not imagine having one without the other.

“Thanks for the many years of love and laughs … radio will never be the same …” she commented.

Louise Michelle wrote that “Sunshine Coast air waves are not going to be the same”.

“What legends and truly humbled to have been along for your journey,” said Melinda Swan.
