Fans are fuming after a controversial change to Triple J’s operation of the 2024 Hottest 100 countdown.

Contrary to previous years, the ABC radio network has opted not to post song summaries of the countdown on social media, meaning people who are not tuning into the radio live cannot learn the results.

The ABC announced in August 2023 they would be shutting down nearly all of their official X accounts, formerly Twitter – including Triple J – which had a following of more than 500,000 people.

In the absence of Triple J’s social media hype, many fans have observed a disappointing lack of the usual buzz surrounding the countdown.

“Hottest 100 is not the same without the Twitter countdown,” one person wrote on social media.

“Oh Triple J not being on Twitter anymore is really annoying on #Hottest100 day,” another woman wrote.

“I just want real time updates of the countdown without having to refresh their website, or y’know – listen.”

One man posted his grievance at the change and said “Elon has truly run this platform into the ground”, referring to Elon Musk’s wobbly takeover of Twitter into X.

“The biggest downside of Triple J shutting down their Twitter is that you can’t comment “ya joking, should have been higher!” on every Hottest 100 post,” he said.

Many Australians choose to host and attend Hottest 100 parties, always held on the weekend nearest to Australia Day.

Triple J chose in 2017 to change the date of the much-loved countdown in support of Indigenous Australians, changing it from January 26 to the nearest weekend.
