Taylor Swift’s current bestie Sabrina Carpenter is doing the heavy lifting in giving the Eras Tour some Australian flavour.
The 24-year-old former Disney princess turned pop star brought big energy to her Eras opening set and a crowd-pleasing cover of Hopelessly Devoted To You in honour of our late national treasure Olivia Newton-John.
The savvy star also changed up the outro lyrics to her 2022 single Nonsense to avoid making that fatal error of namechecking the wrong city during the performance.
“Aren’t you glad I know how to say Melbourne?” she sang at the MCG shows. No doubt she will sub Sydney in for the second leg of the Australian tour.
Carpenter is finally coming into her own as an artist and shaking off the shackles of Disney princessdom which dogged her early records, released by the family-friendly media giant’s Hollywood Records.
She signed with the respected Island Records imprint in 2022 to release her fifth record Emails I Can’t Send which has significantly boosted her music career.
Swift has also been influential in championing Carpenter’s artistry; the Nonsense singer’s first YouTube upload was her cover of Picture To Burn back in 2009.
The pair were snapped regularly hanging out at awards shows through 2022 and Swift announced her in June as the opening act for her Eras Tour concerts in Latin America and then Australia and Asia.
“I’m a very lucky girl, I get to have amazing opening acts here on the Eras Tour,” Taylor said during her opening night in Mexico in August.
“And here in Mexico City we have an artist, who is not only one of my favourite artists — I love her album — but I also consider to be one of my friends. So I am so proud to say that Sabrina Carpenter is on this tour!”
Carpenter’s joyous performances at the Melbourne shows, which drew a big crowd of early arrivals for a support act, have given a streaming boost to her singles, with last year’s hit Feather racing back up the Top Songs chart in Australia on Spotify, entering the top 30 on Thursday.
Australian listeners on Spotify are streaming Sabrina Carpenters music 43 per cent more this week than before she landed in Australia.
Carpenter has also been making headlines in recent weeks after she was snapped with her new beau Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan.
And a fun fact about Carpenter and her Hollywood lineage is she is the niece of Nancy Cartwright, the voice actor behind Bart Simpson on The Simpsons.
