Two fans of Taylor Swift have embarked on a 1,500km trip from Lismore to Melbourne to catch the US superstar on her Aussie tour.
But a sign they scribbled on the back window of their car has attracted some negative attention.
The women, Emily and Gemma, requested donations for fuel and displayed their PayID number to the public.
“1500 KMs to Taylor Swift. #2brokegirls,” the message read.
But their fundraising efforts sparked a wave criticism on social media, with some Australians labelling it as “embarrassing and shameless” to ask for money for concert expenses while everyone is being put through the ringer amid the cost of living crisis.
“I’m not here to start fights or s*** on Taylor Swift or her fans,” one woman wrote on social media.
“I’m just making a point about how embarrassing and shameless it is to ask others for money to go to a concert because they can’t afford it.
“No, you don’t have to donate to them, but it’s wild to ask for donations when everyone is struggling right now.”
Another commented on the fact that if the pair “could afford Swift tickets, they can afford goddamn fuel”.
But others saw the amusing side to their ploy, with one person even donating money to support their trip.
“This is hilarious. I have adult money so I sent them some. Hope they have fun,” the person wrote.
Thousands of Swifties for the first of Swift’s three Melbourne concerts.
At least 86,000 fans are enjoying the US megastar’s concert tonight.
It is the largest audience Swift has played in front of.
Over a thousand fans swarmed the merchandise tents outside the MCG about an hour before the gates opened.
Anticipation is high ahead of the first show, with many left wondering what the surprise songs will be.
The 34-year-old performs two surprise acoustic songs at each concert, giving fans something different each night.
A crowd gathered along the grassed areas near the stadium where ticketless fans are expected settle in to take in Swift’s performance.
Swift will play three shows over three nights at the MCG from Friday in Melbourne before jetting over to Sydney for another four shows at Accor Stadium next weekend.
