‘Painful’: Fans in Melbourne not thrilled with Aqua’s final Aussie show

Aqua performed the final show of their Australian tour on Wednesday night, but a video on TikTok has detailed a fan’s less than thrilling experience.

Iconic ‘90s pop band Aqua left fans wanting after their show in Melbourne Wednesday night, with concert goers claiming their vocals weren’t as polished as usual.

In a video posted to TikTok, the Danish-Norwegian group were seen opening their final Australian show at Margaret Court Arena with their 2000 hit Cartoon Heroes.

“This is painful,” user @xoxomissflo wrote on the clip as singer Lene Nystrom started the song.

Aqua performed in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

The pop band left fans wanting.

“The opening really showed what we were in for tonight … it was not the vibe,” the person added.

Taking to the comment section, another said they saw Aqua live “a few years ago” and said it was a disappointing experience, while another said their Melbourne show sounded like “drunk karaoke”.

“Saw them at a 90s thing a few years ago, they came out after Vengaboys (who were great) and we left after 2 songs. Not a good vibe at all,” they wrote.

A third said they attended the band’s show at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Tuesday night, claiming Nystrom’s vocals improved as the night progressed.

“Her voice started like this in Sydney but got soooo much better later,” they said.

“Hopefully you were all offered refunds,” another wrote.

However, there was also support for Aqua in the comment section, with one fan saying their Sydney show was “epic”, while another added they saw the group in 2014 and it was “amazing”.

Aqua took to Instagram after the show thanking Melburnians for their support, saying, “What a night. Thank you for sharing this night with us. We never wanna say goodbye.”

It comes after Aqua made headlines for their “horrendous” show in Perth a week ago.

The concert at Metro City got off on the wrong foot before the band even stepped on stage, with the crowd spotting an embarrassing error on a stage screen.

“I knew they were off to a bad start when the screen behind them said ‘Hello Adelaide’,” Mix94.5 producer Shelby Brady said on Pete & Kymba for Breakfast Friday.

The concert later took a turn for the worse when Nystrom disappeared from the stage for an hour, with her fellow band members soon joining her backstage, before she returned visibly upset and donning her pyjamas.

“They come back on at 10pm. The lead female singer was wearing pleather before, she’s dressed out of that and she’s now in her actual pyjamas,” Brady continued.

“She was crying … heavy breathing for the whole time and that was for the entire hour performing.”

Days later, on Wednesday morning, Nystrom was seen vaping inside Sydney airport as she sat in the food court.

Aqua’s Aussie arena tour, which was announced in January, was downgraded to smaller venues earlier this month.

The Barbie Girl hit makers were scheduled to host crowds at bigger venues, including Brisbane Entertainment Centre and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, with the band citing the “current climate” as the reason for the change.

“With the current climate for festivals and tours the way it is, the tour has been moved into new venues, and the dates have been changed slightly to make sure the shows still go ahead,” Aqua wrote in a statement in early March.

“All tickets remain valid for the new shows! We deeply hope you will hold on to them.”

Aqua instead performed shows at Perth’s Metro City, Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall, Brisbane’s Eatons Hill Hotel, Sydney’s Enmore Theatre and Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena.

They were also forced to cut a series of announced supporting acts including East 17, Phats & Small, Big Brovaz, Booty Luv, Urban Cookie and Cookie Collective, with only 2 Unlimited joining them for their tour.
