VOICE winner Karise Eden has revealed she narrowly escaped serious injury after driving her ute into the back of her partner’s vehicle.

Eden and her partner were moving furniture from Bundaberg to Brisbane last month when the accident happened near Toowoomba, south Queensland.

A number of cars were involved in the incident, which took place on a blind corner with poor vision and a 100km/h speed zone.

“My partner put his brakes on because the car in front of him, which was turning right on a tiny bridge, put her brakes on,” Eden recalled.

“Then another car was coming towards her. Basically I had three choices. It was go through the guard rail down a mountain side, hit the back of the trailer behind my partner’s car or hit oncoming traffic. I remember thinking ‘I can’t effing get out of this’ and hit the trailer — which funnily enough is my trailer — at about 70 or 80km/h. I hit the back of my own bloody trailer and my own bloody fiance! It was absolutely horrible.”

Eden, 24, had her two-year-old son Blayden in the back seat of her ute.

“All I remember was a loud bang. It was like I disappeared for two seconds. Then all I could hear was Blayden screaming in the back, thankfully, and I knew everyone was OK. I had my giant black great dane tied up, she was OK too.

“It was scary but even the police officer on the scene said ‘You did good, you picked the right option’. I’ve got a huge big black ute, if I didn’t have that the injuries would have been a lot more serious. I’ve got some seatbelt burn on my neck and my arm got bruised from the airbag and my top lip got smashed, it’s healed now but it was all very traumatic in the moment.”

The singer said she is a cautious driver but has been given a wake up call.

“You don’t want to get into the ‘What ifs’ but we have. It’s such a scary reality. Every morning when people get up to go to work and get in your car you’re risking your life. It was a scary thing to happen

“I had my child in the car, I hadn’t had a drink in two weeks, I was concentrating, I didn’t even have music on. There was nothing I was doing that was abnormal or illegal, you have to really be cautious you never know what’s around the blind corner. They really should look at that stretch of road though, there should be warning signs or the speed should be reduced or the bridge widened.”

Eden is now working on her third album and is playing shows in Melbourne this weekend, at St Kilda’s Memo Music Hall on Saturday and Caravan Music Club in Oakleigh on Sunday.

“The words honest, raw and authentic have been drummed into my head,” Eden said. “They have become a mantra for this album.”
